Guild Wars 3 Takes Players 1,000 Years Into the Past to Ancient Orr

Guild Wars 3 will move the series far into its own past, taking place roughly 1,000 years before the original Guild Wars in the ancient kingdom of Orr.

ArenaNet says the setting was chosen because Orr sits at the center of many important events in Guild Wars history. At the same time, the large gap between Guild Wars 3 and the earlier games gives the studio enough freedom to introduce the world without expecting newcomers to understand decades of existing lore.

Players will take the role of a Veil Warden while exploring Orr before the region became the ruined location known to players of the previous games.

Ancient Orr gives ArenaNet room to explore unexplained history

Orr has been important to the franchise for years, but players have generally experienced it through the consequences of events that happened long before the stories of Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson explained that major themes from the original Guild Wars can be traced to this earlier period, including events that occurred before the gods disappeared from the world.

Guild Wars 2 later showed a very different version of Orr. In that game, the ruined kingdom is raised from the ocean by an undead Elder Dragon, allowing players to explore what remains of the civilization approximately 1,000 years after the period depicted in Guild Wars 3.

Longtime players have wanted to see Orr before its destruction for more than a decade, according to ArenaNet. That makes the location particularly important for people who have followed the wider history of Tyria.

The studio is also deliberately using a period that has not been extensively documented outside ArenaNet.

Johanson said only about two pages of recorded history from this era have previously been released publicly. ArenaNet has considerably more internal material, but most of it has never been shown to players.

That limited public history gives the developers space to build new characters, cultures, locations, and conflicts without constantly working around events that players already know in detail.

New players will not need Guild Wars 1 or Guild Wars 2

Despite the connection to established lore, ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 is being designed as an accessible starting point.

Players who know the earlier games may recognize certain species, locations, names, and historical references. However, they should not need that knowledge to understand the main story.

Because the game takes place so far before Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, much of the setting will also be unfamiliar to existing fans.

ArenaNet sees that as a useful balance. Experienced players can identify links to future events, while newcomers can learn about ancient Orr at the same time as everyone else.

The approach also avoids making Guild Wars 3 dependent on extensive knowledge of the first two games. That could be especially important as ArenaNet expands the franchise to another platform.

Guild Wars 3 is currently confirmed for PC and PlayStation 5. A full release date has not been announced, although the studio plans to hold a beta in fall 2027.

ArenaNet has also been discussing other major changes in the sequel, including a new momentum system designed to connect movement and combat abilities more smoothly. Combined with the ancient Orr setting, the studio appears to be using Guild Wars 3 as both a continuation of the franchise's history and a new entry point for players who have never visited Tyria before.
