Grand Theft Auto 6 may be heading toward the biggest launch in gaming history, with one market analysis estimating that the game could sell around 51 million copies during its first week.
The estimate is based on early digital preorder spending rather than confirmed sales. GTA 6 reportedly generated about $180 million across the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain during the first week that preorders were available.
Those six markets account for an estimated 69 percent of the console audience for Grand Theft Auto 5. Using that share as a reference, the analysis places worldwide digital preorder spending for GTA 6 at roughly $260 million during the same period.
From there, the forecast depends on how early preorder demand usually translates into total launch revenue. Since GTA 6 is a sequel to one of the most successful games ever released, the estimate assumes that many buyers are willing to commit long before reviews arrive.
Early preorder demand is already unusually high
The reported $260 million global figure would represent the largest opening week for digital preorders observed in the available market data.
That does not mean GTA 6 has already earned several billion dollars. The larger figures are projections based on historical preorder patterns and assumptions about how much of the final launch demand has already been captured.
| Estimate | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| First week spending in six major markets | $180 million |
| Estimated global first week preorder spending | $260 million |
| Projected launch week revenue range | $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion |
| Midpoint estimate | About $4.5 billion |
| Estimated average selling price | $88 |
| Implied unit sales | Around 51 million copies |
At an assumed average selling price of $88, a $4.5 billion launch week would translate to roughly 51 million copies.
That figure is close to another public estimate of around 45 million copies at launch, suggesting that several analysts expect an unusually large opening even if they disagree on the exact number.
The forecast depends on how GTA 6 follows historical preorder patterns
The analysis compares GTA 6 with three broad preorder models.
A completely new franchise usually sees slower early demand because buyers wait for reviews and gameplay impressions. A sequel with uncertain quality may attract a moderate number of early orders before increasing closer to release. A proven sequel with a loyal audience tends to collect a larger share of its total demand at the beginning.
GTA 6 is being treated as closest to the third category.
Under that model, the first week of preorders may account for about 5.8 percent of total preorder and launch period revenue. Applying that ratio to the estimated $260 million opening produces the central forecast.

The difficulty is that GTA 6 does not fit neatly into any existing category.
It has more than a decade of built up demand since Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in 2013. That could mean a larger than normal share of committed buyers ordered immediately, leaving less growth for later months.
At the same time, GTA is not an annual franchise. It does not have the repeated purchasing habits of a sports series, and there are no yearly carryover rewards encouraging players to order early.
The realistic range remains wide
The same analysis tested several different preorder curves.
A more front loaded pattern would mean that the opening week represented a larger share of total demand, producing a lower final estimate. A slower curve would suggest more buyers are still waiting, resulting in a higher launch figure.
That creates a broad projected range of $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion during launch week.
| Scenario | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Strongly front loaded demand | Many committed buyers ordered immediately |
| Proven sequel pattern | Early demand remains strong through launch |
| Slower preorder growth | More buyers wait for trailers, reviews, or release |
| Conservative estimate | Around $3.25 billion |
| Higher estimate | Up to $5.2 billion |
Even the lower end would place GTA 6 among the largest entertainment launches ever.
The analysis also rejects online claims that the game has already generated more than $1 billion in preorders. That number is considered inconsistent with the early spending data and with historical preorder behavior.
GTA 6 could outperform current public forecasts
One of the more optimistic outside estimates suggests GTA 6 could generate $7.6 billion in bookings during its first 60 days.
The new launch week forecast does not directly confirm that figure, but its upper range would represent a large share of it within only seven days.
Rockstar benefits from an unusually large existing audience. Grand Theft Auto 5 has remained commercially active for more than a decade, while GTA Online continues to introduce new players to the series.
GTA 6 also arrives with a high expected selling price and several editions likely to raise the average amount spent per buyer. Premium versions, digital upgrades, and possible bundles could all increase revenue without requiring the full 51 million unit estimate.
The game is scheduled to launch in November 2026. With several months remaining, preorder numbers could change significantly as Rockstar releases more gameplay footage, confirms platform features, and reveals final editions.
The 51 million estimate should therefore be viewed as a model rather than a sales target guaranteed to be reached. Still, the opening preorder performance suggests that GTA 6 is already operating at a scale few games have matched.
