Google has released a major Chrome 148 security update, and you should install it as soon as possible. The update fixes 151 vulnerabilities across desktop and mobile versions of Chrome, including 22 flaws rated critical. Google says none of the bugs are known to be exploited in the wild yet, but that can change quickly once technical details become public.
The updated Chrome versions are 148.0.7778.216 and 148.0.7778.217 for Windows, 148.0.7778.215 and 148.0.7778.216 for macOS, and 148.0.7778.215 for Linux. Google has also released Chrome 148.0.7778.215 for Android. The iOS version has moved to Chrome 149.0.7827.45.
The biggest risk comes from use after free bugs and critical ANGLE flaws
More than half of the fixed issues are use after free vulnerabilities. These bugs happen when software continues using memory after it has already been released. Attackers often look for this type of flaw because it can sometimes be used to crash a browser, corrupt memory, or run malicious code.
Google fixed 66 use after free bugs in this update. The company also patched 35 vulnerabilities in ANGLE, Chrome’s OpenGL compatibility layer. Four of the ANGLE flaws are rated critical.

Google discovered 134 of the vulnerabilities internally, while 17 were reported by outside security researchers. The company has awarded $137,500 in bug bounties so far for the externally reported issues.
The critical flaws are tracked from CVE 2026 9872 through CVE 2026 9893. Google usually limits technical details at first so attackers do not get easy instructions before most people have updated.
You do not need to wait for Chrome to update on its own. Open Chrome, click the three dot menu, go to Help, then About Google Chrome. The browser will check for the latest version and install it if available. After that, restart Chrome to finish the update.
Chrome usually updates automatically, but manual checking is safer when a large security release arrives. This update is especially important because it includes a high number of serious vulnerabilities, and attackers often study patches quickly to find ways to target older browser versions.
Google is expected to release Chrome 149 next week, but this Chrome 148 update should not be skipped. If Chrome is your main browser, updating now is the safest move.
