God of War Laufey will launch for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, while Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed that another game featuring Kratos is already in development.
The announcements were made during a San Diego Comic-Con panel focused on Laufey. The release date settles earlier reports that placed the game somewhere between February and March 2027.
Cory Barlog also confirmed that the next Kratos-led game will connect directly to Laufey. He described the upcoming title as part of a broader continuation, with the new game designed to expand earlier events while preparing the story for what follows.
God of War Laufey will therefore serve as more than a separate side story about Faye. Its characters and events are expected to contribute directly to the next main chapter of the franchise.

Laufey will connect the Norse story to Kratos’ next adventure
Barlog explained that the team is using Laufey to continue ideas established in earlier God of War games and create a foundation for the next project.
This means the game is unlikely to function only as a historical account of Faye’s life before meeting Kratos. It may also introduce characters, locations and conflicts that remain important after the events of God of War Ragnarök.
The developers have not revealed when Laufey takes place or how much of the story will occur before the previous games. Its direct connection to the next Kratos title suggests that some parts could have consequences for the present-day timeline.
Santa Monica Studio has repeatedly indicated that Kratos still has stories left to tell. The newly confirmed project now makes that direction more concrete, although its title, setting and release window remain unknown.
Barlog referred to the future game as something the studio is actively building rather than a distant idea. However, he did not explain how far development has progressed.
Phranque was planned as part of the story from the beginning
The Laufey panel also addressed Phranque, a talking cosmic cube who has attracted criticism since the character was introduced.
According to Barlog, Phranque was included in the story from its earliest stages and was not added late in development. He said the character has been part of the team’s wider plan for expanding the God of War world.
Jack Quaid voices Phranque and described the character as innocent and focused on the present. Quaid said Phranque sees hope in Faye and can bring out a similar quality in her.

The comments suggest that Phranque may play both a narrative and gameplay role. Earlier statements from the development team indicated that the character supports unusual mechanics, although those systems have not been explained in detail.
Some fans have questioned whether the character fits the tone of the series. Santa Monica Studio appears confident that Phranque serves a larger purpose connected to Laufey and the next Kratos story.
Faye’s game is designed as part of a larger plan
Faye was central to the Norse God of War storyline even though she was already dead when the 2018 game began.
Her decisions shaped the journey of Kratos and Atreus, while later revelations established her importance to the giants and the events leading to Ragnarök.
Laufey gives the studio an opportunity to explore her directly rather than through memories, prophecies and stories told by other characters.
The game could explain how she became involved with the giants, how she met Kratos and why she made specific choices before her death.
However, Barlog’s comments indicate that the story will also look forward. Its purpose includes preparing characters and ideas for the next game rather than only filling gaps in the past.
This creates an unusual structure for the project. It can expand a character whose story appeared complete while also introducing elements that continue beyond Ragnarök.
The next Kratos game remains largely unknown
Santa Monica Studio has not announced the title, location or central conflict of the next Kratos game.
It is also unclear whether Atreus will return as a playable character or whether the series will move to a different mythology.
God of War Ragnarök left several possible directions open. Kratos began taking on a new role in the Norse world, while Atreus left to search for surviving giants.
A direct connection to Laufey could mean the next game continues unresolved questions involving the giants, Faye’s plans or Phranque.
It could also use Laufey to introduce a threat or location before Kratos encounters it later.
The studio has not confirmed whether the project will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5 or target future hardware.
Because Laufey will not arrive until February 2027, a full reveal of the next game may still be some time away.
February 2027 is becoming crowded with major releases
God of War Laufey will enter a busy launch period.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for February 12, only four days earlier. Persona 4 Revival, Fable and Metro 2039 are also expected during the same general period.
This creates strong competition for player attention and spending.
Sony is likely to position Laufey as one of its most important PlayStation 5 releases of early 2027. The God of War name gives it a large established audience, but the focus on Faye may allow the game to offer a different perspective from the Kratos-led entries.
The February date also places the release less than seven months away, making additional trailers and gameplay demonstrations likely before the end of 2026.
Santa Monica Studio still needs to explain the game’s combat, structure, world design and Phranque’s mechanical role.
The release date confirms when players will be able to judge those ideas for themselves. It also makes clear that Laufey is a central part of the franchise’s future, with its story directly preparing the next chapter led by Kratos.
