Gen ATLAS Revealed as Fumito Ueda’s Next Open World Adventure

Gen ATLAS is the official name of the next game from Fumito Ueda and genDesign, marking the creator’s first new project in years. The game was shown during Summer Game Fest 2026, where it received a new trailer, a title reveal, and a clearer look at its lonely world, massive machines, and open world action adventure structure.

The project was first introduced at The Game Awards 2024 under the working name Project Robot. At the time, very little was known beyond its connection to Ueda, who is best known for Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian. With the Summer Game Fest reveal, the game now has a proper identity and a basic setup.

Gen ATLAS is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On PC, it will launch first through the Epic Games Store because Epic Games is publishing the title. A Steam release may arrive later, but only after the exclusivity period ends. No release date or release window has been announced yet.

A silent planet and a giant robot shape the core mystery

The story begins with the player waking up on an abandoned planet without knowing why. The world is described as vast, quiet, and filled with the remains of some large forgotten design. Colossal structures stretch across plains, deserted facilities, and an ever changing sea, giving the setting the same kind of scale and mystery often associated with Ueda’s earlier work.

At the center of the experience is a huge robot. The machine is not only there for spectacle. Its power will open routes to places that were previously unreachable, changing how players understand and move through the world. The trailer also suggested large scale encounters between massive robots, giving Gen ATLAS a sense of size that immediately separates it from many modern action adventure games.

The game is not being pitched as a loud action title built only around combat. Its world appears to be the real focus. The abandoned planet, the forgotten machines, and the mystery behind the player’s awakening all point toward a story that will unfold through exploration rather than constant explanation.

Ueda said the team is grateful to fans who have waited to learn more about the game. He also said the goal is to create an experience that inspires quiet wonder and discovery. That comment fits the mood of the trailer, which leaned more on atmosphere and scale than on detailed systems or dialogue.

Summer Game Fest 2026 had several major announcements, including Resident Evil Veronica, new Cuphead projects, and Stranger Than Heaven’s release date. Even in that crowded lineup, Gen ATLAS stood out because of the creator behind it and the long gap since his last major game.

There is still a lot we do not know. The trailer showed third person action and large robotic figures, but the combat, traversal, progression, and story structure remain unclear. It is also not yet known how open the world will feel in practice or how much freedom players will have while exploring the abandoned planet.

Still, the reveal gives Ueda fans enough to hold onto. Gen ATLAS appears to be a single player adventure about scale, silence, lost technology, and discovery. If it can combine those elements with the emotional weight found in Ueda’s earlier work, it could become one of the most distinctive open world games in development.
