Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will keep Zack’s story going, but the original’s emotional core still matters

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will continue Zack Fair’s expanded role, but Square Enix is still trying to protect the heart of the original game.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed in a new interview that Zack’s story will carry into the final part of the remake trilogy. That is important because Zack has become one of the biggest signs that the remake project is not simply retelling Final Fantasy 7 scene by scene.

In the original Final Fantasy 7, Zack’s role was small but important. Later spin offs made him much more popular, especially Crisis Core. The remake trilogy has leaned into that popularity by giving him a much larger place in the story.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth went even further by making Zack playable and giving him his own story sections. Its ending also left players with many questions about where his path is going next.

Hamaguchi said Zack’s presence was part of the remake concept from an early stage. The team uses him to show changes in the world without explaining everything directly through dialogue. In other words, Zack helps players feel that something is different.

That does not mean every major event can change.

Hamaguchi also said the team is keeping one central question alive until the end: whether the characters’ fates can truly change. But he made clear that the remake trilogy cannot abandon the emotional core of the original game.

That is the balance Square Enix is trying to maintain. The remake trilogy needs surprises so longtime fans do not already know everything. But if it changes too much, it risks losing what made Final Fantasy 7 powerful in the first place.

This is especially important after Rebirth’s ending. The game changed how one of the most famous moments in JRPG history was presented, leaving players unsure what is real, what has changed, and what may still be unavoidable.

The new comments suggest Part 3 will keep playing with that uncertainty. Zack will still matter, and the story may still take unexpected paths. But the developers do not seem interested in rewriting Final Fantasy 7 into something completely separate.

That may mean Zack’s final fate will not change, even if his journey has become much larger than it was in the 1997 game.

There is still no release date for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. Square Enix has also not shown the game properly yet, though previous comments suggest Cid, Vincent, the Highwind, and Knights of the Round will be important parts of the finale.

For now, the message is clear. Zack is not done. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will continue his story, but Square Enix still wants the ending to respect the original game’s themes, emotions, and identity.
