Fallout 76 has finally received native Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S support through its new The Slasher update, giving players access to improved performance alongside new quests, seasonal content and crafting changes.
The update also brings native PlayStation 5 support, allowing the game to make better use of current generation console hardware.
On compatible displays, Fallout 76 can now run at up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS, a major upgrade for console players who previously relied on the older version of the game.
Native current generation support arrives after years of waiting
Fallout 76 originally launched in 2018, before the Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 reached the market.
Although the game remained playable on newer consoles through backward compatibility, it had not received a fully native version designed specifically around the newer hardware.
The Slasher update changes that.

The improved console version should make movement, combat and exploration feel smoother compared with the older console experience.
Fallout 76 depends heavily on real time combat and large outdoor environments, so a higher frame rate can have a noticeable effect on responsiveness.
The Slasher introduces a new questline
The update is named after a new storyline centered on a serial killer known as The Slasher.
Players are tasked with hunting the character through a new series of quests.
The horror theme also ties into the wider seasonal content arriving alongside the update.
Season 26 is called Beware the Blood Moon and includes Halloween themed rewards.
That gives players another set of cosmetics and seasonal items to unlock as they progress.
Legacy Seasons bring back older rewards
Another major addition is the introduction of Legacy Seasons.
This system allows a previous season to return alongside the current one, giving players another opportunity to earn content they may have missed.
The first returning season is Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel.
It will remain available throughout Season 26.
This approach gives newer players access to older rewards while also giving returning players another progression path.
For a live service game that has accumulated years of seasonal content, the system could help reduce the problem of permanently unavailable rewards.
Legendary crafting becomes more flexible
The update also changes weapon and armor crafting.
Unique weapons and armor can now have their Legendary Mods changed.
Players can also add a fourth Legendary Mod to compatible gear.
That gives you more control over high level equipment and makes unique items more flexible for specialized builds.
Previously, some unique equipment could become less useful if its fixed effects did not match the character build you wanted to create.
Allowing more customization should make it easier to keep those items relevant at higher levels.
Fishing content expands on September 22
New seasonal fish are scheduled to appear on September 22, 2026.
Players can speak with Captain Raymond for clues about where those fish can be found.
This adds another activity to the update beyond combat and seasonal progression.
The Slasher patch also includes a larger collection of bug fixes and balance adjustments across the game.
Fallout 76 continues to evolve years after launch
The arrival of native Xbox Series X and S support is one of the most significant technical changes Fallout 76 has received on consoles.
The game has been continuously expanded since its difficult 2018 launch, with new quests, systems, events and quality of life improvements added over time.
The Slasher update continues that pattern while finally addressing a long standing request from current generation console players.
The combination of up to 4K resolution, 60 FPS support, updated crafting, returning seasonal content and a new questline makes this update relevant to both returning players and those still actively exploring Appalachia.
