The Elder Scrolls Online has launched Season One on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, bringing the MMORPG into a new content model at a difficult time for its developer. ZeniMax Online Studios is moving away from its older Chapter based expansion structure, with future DLC planned as free additions tied to seasonal updates.

On paper, Season One looks like a strong shift for the game. From July through October, the update schedule includes new systems, two questlines, a new Trial, a large open world event, and a visual refresh for Glenumbra. The new approach gives the studio more room to experiment, while players get a steadier flow of features instead of waiting for one large paid expansion.

The first wave is already live and focuses heavily on the Thieves Guild. Players can access the Return of the Thieves Guild questline in Glenumbra, the Tamriel Tome seasonal reward track, the Favors system, Dynamic Encounters, and the Glenumbra refresh. Favors turns daily quests into a reputation driven loop connected to NPC relationships and repeatable rewards, while Dynamic Encounters are meant to make older zones feel more active with spontaneous world events.

Season One has promising content, but the studio’s reduced workforce creates uncertainty

More content is planned across the season. On July 29, ZeniMax Online will add Sheogorath Tours Tamriel, a six part questline centered on the Mad God causing chaos across the world. A larger update is planned for September 21, bringing the Crimson Veldt Trial, the Nowhere Vault, the Rumors system, and several player experience improvements.

The Crimson Veldt is a new 12 player PvE Trial set in Hircine’s Hunting Grounds. It will feature boss encounters, challenging group fights, and a confrontation with the First Turned. It also introduces mounted combat to The Elder Scrolls Online for the first time, which could become one of the season’s most interesting gameplay additions.

The Nowhere Vault offers a different type of experience. It is a solo activity set in a realm between realms, where players help Sage Voernet by solving puzzles and navigating shifting rooms. The Rumors system adds hidden clues across Tamriel, encouraging exploration and letting players assemble story threads in a less linear way.

The season will also include the High Seas of Tamriel event from September 30 to October 14. That event will send players across the Abecean Sea, with ship to ship combat, ocean floor exploration, pirates, and sunken treasure.

All of this makes Season One sound ambitious, but the timing is uncomfortable. ZeniMax Online Studios has reportedly lost 213 employees as part of Xbox’s latest layoffs. That raises serious questions about how much long term support the studio can maintain, especially after earlier uncertainty tied to the cancellation of Project Blackbird.

The concern is not only about Season One, which already has a defined schedule. The bigger question is what happens after it. ZeniMax Online had previously teased a return to Skyrim in 2027, which would likely be a major draw for longtime Elder Scrolls fans. The studio was also reportedly working on cross play, a feature that could help the game’s population by letting friends play together across platforms.

With such a large workforce reduction, those plans may become harder to deliver on time. Live service MMOs need steady updates, technical maintenance, customer support, event planning, balance work, and long term content production. Cutting deeply into the team behind that work can affect both the pace and quality of future releases.

Season One shows that The Elder Scrolls Online still has creative momentum. Its new systems, free DLC direction, and fresh event structure could give the game a healthier content rhythm. But after 213 reported firings at ZeniMax Online, the future looks less secure than the update itself. For players, the season may be worth jumping into now, but the bigger concern is whether the studio will still have enough support to deliver the plans that were supposed to follow.
