Techland has cancelled the planned Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Dying Light: The Beast, leaving the game available only on current generation platforms and PC.

The developer said the decision was based on technical limitations rather than a desire to exclude older console owners. According to Techland, the game’s open world, visual systems, combat and traversal were designed around the processing power and memory available in newer hardware.

The Xbox One and PS4 editions were expected to arrive after the current generation release, but those plans have now been abandoned. Players who purchased or reserved the cancelled versions will be eligible for refunds.

Dying Light: The Beast is available on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, where its larger environments and demanding systems can run without the compromises that would have been required on older consoles.

Techland says the game depends on current generation hardware

The developer explained that Dying Light: The Beast was built from the beginning to use the capabilities of modern consoles.

Its open world must track enemies, environmental systems and player movement across large areas. The game also relies heavily on fast traversal, detailed environments and combat that can involve several characters and effects at once.

Older consoles have much less available processing power and memory. Adapting the game would therefore require more than lowering the resolution or reducing a few visual settings.

Techland may have needed to decrease crowd density, simplify environments, reduce draw distances and change how quickly the world loads while the player moves through it.

Those compromises could have affected the design rather than only the presentation. A parkour game depends on responsive movement and continuous loading, so technical limits can directly influence how the game feels.

The studio concluded that the older versions could not provide the experience it wanted to release.

The project’s earlier DLC origins may explain the original plans

Dying Light: The Beast was originally associated with additional content for Dying Light 2 before becoming a separate game.

That earlier connection may help explain why Xbox One and PS4 were initially included. Dying Light 2 was released on older hardware, so an expansion based on the same foundation could reasonably have been expected to support those consoles.

As the scope increased, the technical requirements may also have changed.

A standalone game can introduce larger environments, revised systems and more ambitious technology than a conventional expansion. Once the project moved further away from its earlier form, supporting the older consoles may have become increasingly difficult.

Techland has not provided a detailed development timeline showing exactly when the last generation versions became unworkable. The cancellation announcement only states that the final design depends on current generation hardware.

Kyle Crane returns with new infected abilities

The Beast brings back Kyle Crane, the protagonist of the original Dying Light.

He returns partially infected and able to use powers connected to the creature developing within him. These abilities give combat a more aggressive style while preserving the series’ focus on movement, survival and close range encounters.

The game remains built around exploring dangerous environments filled with infected enemies. Parkour allows players to move across rooftops, climb structures and escape threats without relying entirely on direct combat.

Those systems can place heavy demands on hardware because the game must stream new areas quickly while maintaining responsive controls.

The combination of open world exploration, rapid movement and detailed combat helps explain why Techland chose not to continue with the Xbox One and PS4 editions.

Refunds will be offered to affected players

Anyone who expected to receive the cancelled version will be eligible for a refund.

The exact process may depend on where the game was purchased. Digital orders placed through a platform store may be refunded automatically or handled through the account used for the purchase.

Physical reservations and retailer orders may require customers to contact the seller directly.

Players should check their purchase history, email and retailer account for instructions rather than assuming the refund has already been completed.

Techland’s decision avoids releasing a version that may have suffered from severe performance or visual problems, but the timing will still disappoint people who had not upgraded from Xbox One or PS4.

The cancellation reflects the gradual end of cross generation support

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, but both continued receiving major games long after the arrival of newer consoles.

Cross generation development helped publishers reach a larger audience, especially during the early years of Xbox Series X, Series S and PlayStation 5 when hardware supplies were limited.

That approach has become harder to maintain as developers build games around faster storage, stronger processors and more memory.

Older versions can increase development and testing work because every feature must function across several very different hardware configurations. In some cases, the weakest platform can also limit the design of the entire game.

Dying Light: The Beast is another example of a publisher deciding that the older systems can no longer support the intended experience.

Xbox One owners still have access to a large existing library, including earlier Dying Light games, but new major releases will continue becoming less common as studios focus on current hardware.
