Dragon Quest XII returns as Beyond Dreams after Square Enix restarts development

Square Enix has finally shown Dragon Quest XII again, but not in the form fans expected. After five years of silence, the company confirmed that the game once known as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been rebooted from scratch and is now called Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.

The update came during the series’ 40th anniversary broadcast, where Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii and executive producer Yosuke Saito explained that development on the original version ran into several problems. Rather than continue with a project that was not working as intended, the team decided to restart development. That means the next mainline Dragon Quest will take longer to release than previously expected.

The decision is a major one because Dragon Quest XII was first announced during the franchise’s 35th anniversary event. Since then, Square Enix shared very little about the game, leaving fans to wonder whether development was moving slowly, changing direction, or facing deeper trouble. The new reveal answers that question clearly. The original concept did not survive in its announced form.

Beyond Dreams appears to move away from the darker tone first promised for Dragon Quest XII

The new subtitle, Beyond Dreams, is tied directly to the game’s protagonist. According to Horii, the hero is troubled by strange visions during sleep. Those visions will lead into a larger adventure and a bright future for the character. That detail is interesting because the original Flames of Fate version was described as having a darker tone for the series.

The new direction may not abandon serious storytelling entirely, but the language around Beyond Dreams sounds more hopeful than the earlier pitch. Dragon Quest has always balanced danger with warmth, charm, and adventure, so this shift may bring the game closer to the series’ traditional identity while still adding new ideas.

Beyond Dreams will also be a landmark release because it carries the legacy of two major Dragon Quest creators who are no longer alive. The game will feature the classic character design style of Akira Toriyama and music from Koichi Sugiyama, both of whom shaped the identity of the series for decades. Square Enix also says the game will include new features never seen before in Dragon Quest, though it has not explained those systems yet.

The broadcast also included another announcement for fans who may be waiting a long time for the mainline game. Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, a new spin off planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and the original Nintendo Switch. The company hopes to release it before Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.

That makes sense because Beyond Dreams still seems far away. Square Enix showed enough to confirm that development is moving again, but not enough to suggest a near term launch. After such a long silence, the reboot may be disappointing for fans who expected the game to be further along. Still, a clean restart may be better than forcing an older version forward if the team believed it was not reaching the right standard.

Dragon Quest XII is still alive, but it is now a different project. The Flames of Fate era is over, and Beyond Dreams is Square Enix’s new path for the series.
