This is good info, I’ll be keeping it. But what I NEED to know is how securely is this information held. I already know that Windows userid Passwords are not protected at all. They can be simply hacked or replaced using commonly available tools from the internet.

What encryption algorythm is used on Credential manager.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

This is a very good question. I am planning to continue investigating and experimenting with this tool and write at least one more article about it. I will definitely look at how well this data is encrypted and share what I find out.

I can’t remember the password for the credential manager (Windows 7), and without the right password, I just can’t move to nest step (to access the other computer in home network). Thanks.

Regina

What is the point of the credential manager? I’ve never had to use it. One important question, can I be on another computer at a different location and with this information – ID and password say that is stored in the generic part be able to pull up my home computer and view everything?

what will happen when password changes happened to the saved credential?
do we need to update the new password in credential manager or will it changed automatically? Please confirm.

My problem that Microsoft cannot answer is why does one NOT see and EDIT choice in Windows 8.1 under web credentials.
What would cause that to be the case?

David

The only way to edit web credentials is through Internet Explorer (or Windows Edge on Windows 10). You log into the website you want to change the credential for with your new password and accept the browser’s offer to save the password for that site, just like you did to begin with that created the credential entry in the first place.

I have disabled my credentials and I cannot get back on to get them to work, my password does not work. I cannot create a new user, I need help to fix this.

Kay

under generic credentials is virtualapp/didlogical which has a user name and password that I did not create. I try deleting it but it still reappears. I can change the user name and password but it always change back to the original. How do I delete this? Why is this password and user name there?

I am getting this box on my screen that the windows credentials manager has stopped working and I can’t get rid of it. I have to reboot, and it’s happening way too often. I get tired of rebooting.
Can you tell me why this is happening?
Thanks you if you can.

Hi,

Thanks for valuable information.
Could you please help for my following issue.

– My pGina Account got expired, after login with new reset password, my all saved passwords in credential manager are cleared. Why it is happened. Any reasons, if any solution is available please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

Very helpful. Brief, concise, and included everything you need. If you needed more than go to Microsoft site.
Thanks.
in addition, I finally got rid of the warning message that appeared immediately after each windows reboot which stated “Some network devices could not be connected…”.
This was due to the Network Shares from another Windows domain (B) I had connected. I check-marked these shares as ‘reconnect at each logon’. The other Windows domain (B) connection required a different set of credentials than my local computer Windows login domain (A) credentials. At one point in time, it was necessary for me to reset/change my Windows login credentials on the other domain (B), probably due to an ‘expired’ password. I believe Windows Credential Manager must have been providing the ‘old’ password credentials (B) at each reboot, hence the error message.
My knowledge gained here (from DigitalCitizen) will help me to use the tools Microsoft enables to enhance the quality of my compute life. Thanks again DigitalCitizen.

I recently added a comment to this article and I suspect the CAPTCHA routine has been hacked. The CAPTCHA ‘text’ that should be appearing in the small CAPTCHA window has been replaced by an Advertisement linked-image. (i.e. H-R Block and “Living with Chronic Migraine?”)
I will attempt to locate a ‘webmaster’ contact link for investigation of my suspicion.
I’m glad this world we live in today, where perpetrators commonly exist, is only temporary.
Thanks again to DigitalCitizen for improving the quality of my compute life. Hope to see you in the next life.
Now, go get them Suckers!

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Thank you for your feedback and I’m happy that we have managed to help. Regarding the Captcha – it is not Hacked in any way. The system we use, makes people interact with an advertisement instead of providing a traditional Captcha. For us, this means a bit of revenue and a more effective spam filter. Not sure if you believe this but now we barely get spam in comments while, when using traditional Captchas, we had lots.

When I’m at home and connect to my office VPN, I can’t access my network drive shares. When I go into Credentials Manager, under Windows Credentials, there’s a session credential. I can delete it and my shares start working. But next time I’m on VPN it comes back. How can I permanently delete this?

I’ve tried dozens of things found on a Google search. Some examples;

net use \serversharename /delete

cmdkey /delete:server

rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr

Start RegEdit as System account;
psexec -d -i -s regedit
Then change the local security policy from caching 10 credentials, to 0.
Then reboot in an attempt to purge saved credentials. Verified by checking;
HKLMSECURITYCache

Any suggestions appreciated.

It is normal for that to happen. When you connect via VPN it is like you are in a different network. You can connect to your network shares only when Windows sees that you are in the same networks as those shares. Turning on VPN is like being on the network of your VPN provider.

How can we remove these stored details automatically from credential manager in Windows 10?
