Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Undead Labs Address Their Departures From Xbox

Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, and Undead Labs have issued public statements about their futures after Microsoft confirmed that all three studios are leaving the Xbox organization.

The changes form part of a wider restructuring that will remove around 3,200 roles from Microsoft’s gaming business. Compulsion Games and Double Fine will return to independent operation, while Undead Labs is moving to new ownership. Ninja Theory is also being sold, although it has not yet issued a detailed public statement about the transition.

The messages from the three studios offer some reassurance about their immediate plans. None of them announced a closure, and each team indicated that development work will continue after leaving Microsoft.

State of Decay 3 remains in development

Undead Labs confirmed that State of Decay 3 is still coming despite the studio’s move away from Xbox.

The team did not reveal the identity of its new owner or provide a release date for the game. It said more information will be shared later and emphasized that development remains active.

This confirmation is important because State of Decay 3 has been in development for several years. Its future became uncertain after Microsoft announced that Undead Labs would be sold as part of the restructuring.

The statement suggests that funding is in place to continue production. Previous information about the deal indicated that the new ownership arrangement would provide support to complete and grow the project.

Double Fine will become independent again

Double Fine Productions said it will return to independent operation after spending seven years under Xbox.

The studio thanked Microsoft for helping it reach an agreement that preserves its history and working culture. Double Fine also confirmed that ownership of its games will return to the studio, giving the team greater control over its existing properties and future projects.

No new game was announced in the statement. The studio said it will provide more details about its next steps later.

Independence gives Double Fine more creative control, but it also changes how its projects will be funded. Under Microsoft, the studio had access to the resources of a major platform holder. As an independent developer, it may need to work with external publishers, investors, or subscription services to finance future releases.

The studio’s established name and catalogue could help it secure those partnerships. Its previous work includes Psychonauts 2 and several smaller experimental projects.

Compulsion Games retains its three main properties

Compulsion Games confirmed that it will also return to independent management. The studio will keep the rights to Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight.

Keeping those properties gives Compulsion several options for its next project. It could continue one of its existing worlds or begin another original game while using revenue from its established catalogue.

The studio said its immediate priority is supporting employees during the transition. It also plans to continue making distinctive, story focused games after leaving Xbox.

Compulsion was founded as an independent developer in 2009 before Microsoft acquired it in 2018. Its most recent release, South of Midnight, was developed during its time as an Xbox studio.

The future publishing arrangements for previously released games remain unclear. Ownership of an intellectual property does not always include every publishing right connected to an existing release, and the details of these agreements have not been disclosed.

For now, the three statements provide a clearer picture than the initial restructuring announcement. Undead Labs is continuing State of Decay 3, while Double Fine and Compulsion are leaving with control over important parts of their catalogues. Ninja Theory and Arkane have yet to provide the same level of detail about their plans.
