Call of Duty Warzone will leave PS4 and Xbox One as Modern Warfare 4 moves the series forward

Call of Duty: Warzone is officially leaving PS4 and Xbox One later this year, marking the end of support for last generation consoles as Activision moves the series fully into the current hardware era. The game will be delisted and unavailable to download on PS4 and Xbox One starting June 4, 2026. It will remain playable for a while after that, but support will end completely when Season 1 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives later this year.

The decision follows Activision’s confirmation that Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on PS4 or Xbox One. That already showed where the franchise was heading, but removing Warzone support from older consoles is a much bigger step. Warzone is Call of Duty’s free to play entry point, and many players have used it to stay connected to the franchise without buying every annual release or upgrading to newer hardware.

Warzone’s last generation shutdown hits harder because hardware prices are rising

The timing makes this change more difficult for some players. PS4 and Xbox One owners who still play Warzone will now need to move to newer consoles or PC if they want to keep playing after Modern Warfare 4’s first season begins. That would already be a major shift, but it comes during a period when gaming hardware is becoming more expensive.

Current generation consoles, handheld gaming PCs, and PC components have all faced higher prices in recent months. Memory and storage costs have been a major part of that pressure. Valve recently pointed to those rising costs when explaining the Steam Deck’s large price increase. For players who stayed on older hardware because it was the cheaper option, Warzone’s shutdown on PS4 and Xbox One removes one of the last major reasons to keep doing that.

Warzone has been one of the most important free to play games of the last several years. It kept Call of Duty active across console generations and gave players a shared battle royale experience even if they were not ready to upgrade. That broad support helped the game maintain a large audience, but it also placed limits on what Activision could do with future updates.

Moving away from PS4 and Xbox One may allow Warzone to improve technically over time. Developers no longer need to account for older CPUs, slower storage, and tighter memory limits when building future maps, systems, and seasonal updates. That could help the game feel more modern on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and newer platforms.

Still, the cost for players is clear. Anyone still using PS4 or Xbox One will lose access to Warzone by the end of the year. The game will first disappear from storefronts on June 4, then become unplayable once the Modern Warfare 4 seasonal cycle begins.

This is the clearest sign yet that Call of Duty is leaving the old console generation behind. For Activision, it may be a necessary step for the future of the series. For players still on PS4 and Xbox One, it is a forced upgrade moment at a time when gaming hardware is not getting cheaper.
