Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 removes weapon bloom to make gunfights more skill based

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will remove weapon bloom as part of a wider overhaul to shooting, aiming, animation, and weapon customization. The change is designed to give you more control during gunfights by ensuring bullets follow the direction indicated by the weapon’s recoil.

Weapon bloom is commonly used in shooters to reduce accuracy while a character is moving or firing continuously. As bloom increases, the crosshair expands and bullets can travel in slightly random directions, even when the weapon appears to be aimed at a target.

Modern Warfare 4 will abandon that system. Instead, recoil movement and bullet trajectory will remain connected. This means the visible movement of the weapon should provide a clearer indication of where each shot will land.

The development team believes this approach will reduce situations where a player loses a fight because of an unpredictable accuracy penalty. Positioning, recoil control, movement, reaction time, and aiming skill should have a greater influence on the result.

Modern Warfare 4 is changing how weapons look and respond during combat

The removal of bloom is only one part of the revised weapon system. Modern Warfare 4 will also introduce visual improvements intended to make aiming clearer without reducing the impact of effects such as muzzle flashes.

Muzzle flashes will have an invisible area near the centre of the aiming view. The effect will still appear around the weapon, but it should not completely cover an opponent when you fire while aiming down sights.

Depth of field is also being adjusted to provide a more natural view through weapon sights. The background may become less prominent while the target and sight remain easier to follow. These changes are intended to improve visibility while preserving a realistic presentation.

A new dynamic animation system will make weapons respond to the character’s surroundings and actions. The position of a gun may change when you approach cover, move through a narrow space, or look around a corner. These animations should make movement appear more natural without taking control away from the player.

Apex Attachments will expand weapon customization

Modern Warfare 4 will also add Apex Attachments, which provide larger gameplay changes than standard upgrades.

One example involves a single action revolver. Its Apex Attachment introduces a fanning animation that allows the weapon to fire rapidly from the hip. This gives the revolver a different close range role while retaining its basic identity.

An underbarrel rocket launcher can also receive an Apex upgrade that adds laser guidance. Instead of firing only in a fixed direction, the upgraded launcher can guide its projectile toward a marked point.

These attachments could give individual weapons more distinctive uses, although their effect on multiplayer balance will depend on damage values, availability, and the restrictions placed on each upgrade.

The studio is also conducting extensive playtesting to refine weapon balance. Designers have studied real firearms at shooting ranges to understand their weight, handling, recoil, and mechanical behavior. The final game will still prioritize responsive action rather than complete simulation, but those observations are being used to improve animation and weapon feedback.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. It will be available on PC through Steam, Xbox, and Battle.net, as well as Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game will include multiplayer and a separate single player campaign.
