Bungie has delayed Marathon’s next major update and is changing how it plans future content for the extraction shooter.
The Symbiosis update, previously scheduled for September 22, will now launch on December 8. Bungie says the extra time will be used to improve the update before release rather than forcing major features into a fixed seasonal deadline.
The studio is also moving away from a strict seasonal model. Future major updates will instead arrive when Bungie believes they are ready, giving the development team more time for testing and iteration.

Symbiosis will bring Marathon’s planned PvE expansion
Symbiosis was originally expected to serve as Marathon’s third seasonal update.
It will add permanent PvE activities that players can tackle cooperatively, expanding the game beyond its current extraction focused structure.
The update is also planned to introduce a new social space, a team deathmatch mode, improved tutorials and additional changes intended to give Marathon more variety and long term depth.
Bungie says player feedback since launch has repeatedly focused on the need for stronger progression, more content variety and better reasons to keep playing.
The studio agrees that these areas need more work, and the delay is intended to give the team additional time to improve them.
Bungie is abandoning fixed seasonal deadlines
The larger change is how Marathon updates will be scheduled in the future.
Instead of committing major content drops to rigid seasonal dates, Bungie plans to give development teams more flexibility to build, test and refine features before release.
This does not mean Marathon will stop receiving regular updates, but the structure around them will be less tied to traditional season numbers and fixed deadlines.
For a live service game, that is a significant change because seasonal schedules normally determine when new content, progression resets and major balance updates arrive.
Bungie appears to be prioritizing quality and stability over maintaining a predictable seasonal calendar.
October update will reset progression
Before Symbiosis arrives, Bungie plans to release a smaller update in October called Nightfall Refresh.
This update will reset the game’s economy and player progression, requiring everyone to begin again from the revised progression structure.
Bungie says the reset is necessary because Marathon’s second season created major progression problems.
Some players reached endgame content much faster than expected, while others were left behind. That imbalance also made the extraction experience harder to approach and prevented the previous reset from working as intended.
The October refresh is intended to create a healthier starting point for progression before the larger December update.
Some existing activities, including Vault Breaker, will also return temporarily to give players additional content during the wait.
Marathon carries more weight for Bungie now
The changes come at an important time for the studio.
Marathon is currently Bungie’s primary active title as Destiny 2 development approaches its final phase. The studio has also gone through significant layoffs following Marathon’s difficult launch period.
That puts more pressure on Marathon’s future updates to improve player retention and address criticism around content depth and progression.
Delaying Symbiosis removes one of the game’s biggest planned updates from September, but Bungie appears willing to accept that short term gap in exchange for additional development time.
The December update will therefore be an important test of whether the new approach can give Marathon the stronger PvE content, progression and variety Bungie says players have been asking for.
