ARC Raiders is moving to two major updates a year

Embark Studios is changing how it updates ARC Raiders.

The studio says it is moving away from its original monthly update plan and will now release major ARC Raiders updates twice a year. The goal is to make each update larger, more meaningful, and more capable of changing how the game plays.

ARC Raiders had a huge launch in 2025, selling millions of copies and pulling in hundreds of thousands of players on Steam at its peak. Since then, some momentum has slowed, and parts of the community have raised concerns about progression, balance, and the game’s long term direction.

Embark says the monthly update schedule sounded good at first because it kept the game feeling active. But in practice, the studio found that smaller monthly updates limited how much it could change. The pace also was not sustainable for the team or for the bigger ambitions it has for ARC Raiders.

That does not mean the game will go quiet between major updates. Store refreshes, events, bug fixes, balance patches, and smaller live service updates will still happen more often. The change mainly affects big content drops.

The bigger updates will include things like new maps, weapons, ARCs, operations, progression changes, and deeper system improvements.

Embark says the slower major update schedule will also give it more room to work on the health of the game. That includes progression, economy balance, fair play, and anti cheat. In an extraction shooter, those systems matter because every run, fight, loss, and extraction depends on the game feeling fair.

Progression seems to be one of the main reasons for the change. Embark says some of the improvements it wants to make simply need more development time than a monthly cycle allowed.

The first smaller step comes next week, when ARC Raiders gets its first new Trader. This Trader will offer items such as extra stash space and introduce an Expedition Vault.

The next major update is now planned for October 2026. Embark says that update will be big. It is expected to include the game’s largest map so far, a new ARC operation, a new progression system, and an improved skill tree.

This is a risky but sensible move. Live service players often expect constant updates, and a twice yearly major content rhythm could feel slow if the smaller updates are not strong enough. But rushed monthly updates can also feel thin, especially if they do not fix the problems players care about most.

For ARC Raiders, the quality of each major update will matter more than the number of updates. If October’s update really changes progression, adds a strong new map, and improves the long term loop, the slower cadence may be worth it.

Embark is clearly trying to build ARC Raiders for the long term instead of chasing a short term content treadmill. That is probably the right call for a game where balance, economy, extraction tension, and fair play matter as much as new weapons or maps.

ARC Raiders already has a strong foundation. Now the question is whether bigger, slower updates can keep players invested for years instead of months.
