Amazon’s God of War television series has reportedly encountered a major production setback after Ryan Hurst suffered an injury while filming and can no longer continue in the role of Kratos.
Hurst is said to have torn a bicep during a stunt in late June, reportedly while carrying a tree for a scene. He has since undergone surgery, but the expected recovery period could last as long as six months.
That timetable has forced the production to recast Kratos rather than pause filming until Hurst is ready to return. The decision is also connected to Callum Vinson, the young actor playing Atreus. A lengthy delay could affect the childlike appearance the production wants to preserve from the 2018 God of War game.
Filming had already been underway for several months, and four episodes were reportedly completed before the injury occurred. Replacing the lead actor means some or all of that material may need to be filmed again.
Production is expected to resume in October with a new Kratos actor
The series reportedly began filming in February 2026 and is now expected to restart production in mid October.
Amazon has not announced who will replace Hurst, and the recasting process may involve screen tests with Vinson and other members of the ensemble. Kratos is physically demanding, so the production will need an actor who can manage the role’s dramatic and action requirements.

The delay makes a 2027 debut less certain. A late 2027 release may still be possible if production resumes on schedule, but 2028 now appears to be a realistic option.
The amount of completed footage that can be reused will influence the final timetable. Scenes that do not feature Kratos may remain intact, while sequences involving Hurst will likely need to be recreated with the replacement actor.
Ryan Hurst had already prepared extensively for the role
Hurst is best known for playing Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy. He also voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, giving him an existing connection to the franchise before he was selected to play Kratos.
His casting drew mixed reactions because some fans questioned whether he physically matched the character. However, Hurst reportedly trained heavily and added significant muscle before filming began.
Leaving the production because of an injury is therefore an unfortunate outcome after months of preparation and several completed episodes.
The reported circumstances also highlight the risks involved in producing a live action version of God of War. The games feature large scale fights, heavy weapons, climbing, physical movement, and scenes that require actors to perform alongside extensive visual effects.
Even when stunt teams and safety procedures are involved, injuries can still disrupt a production, particularly when the lead actor is affected.

The series is expected to adapt the story of the 2018 God of War game, which follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel across the Norse realms to scatter the ashes of Atreus’s mother.
The relationship between Kratos and his son is central to the story, making the chemistry between the two lead actors especially important. This may make the recasting process more complicated than simply finding an actor with the correct physical appearance.
The adaptation has already been restarted once
Amazon announced the God of War television project in late 2022.
The production was later rebuilt from the beginning in late 2024 after a change in creative leadership. Rafe Judkins, known for The Wheel of Time, left the project, and Ronald D. Moore took over as showrunner.
Moore is known for his work on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind. His involvement suggested that Amazon wanted a more character driven adaptation with a strong long term story plan.
Amazon has ordered two seasons, and both are reportedly being produced back to back. That approach can reduce the gap between seasons, but it also makes a disruption involving the lead actor more significant.
The production must now decide how much of the existing schedule can be preserved while bringing a new Kratos into the project.
The delay does not appear to threaten the series itself, but it adds another challenge to an adaptation that has already gone through a complete creative reset. Amazon’s next major step will be selecting a replacement who can carry the physical presence of Kratos while also handling the quieter relationship between the character and Atreus.
