I compared both 3 or 4 years ago and prefered the Desktop app (not Win 10 version), and have been using it ever since. Glad the see they settled on using that version, so nothing changes for me.
OneNote has been interfering and always poping up on my screen. Where did this come from? I do not remember asking for it. How can make it stop botherig me?
I have One Note running on 2 PCs and 2 Macs. I notice Syncing issues from time to time. I just recently installed it on my desktop PC and that’s when I encountered the two versions. On that machine half my notes are in the One Note App and half are in the One Note For Windows app. It’s very confusing. Can I merge them?
Thank you for the thorough explanation of the differences between the two One Note programs. I think I prefer the One Note 2016 version. I definitely would prefer to have only one programs. Having two gets very confusing.
Good article. I especially like the features lists. That is useful.
You did miss mentioning one version. That was the one with the “Radial menu” that Win tested in Win 8 and 10. For those who like it, you can still get it:
How can I Insert scanned images into OneNote 2016 for Windows? https://support.office.com/en-us/article/How-can-I-Insert-scanned-images-into-OneNote-2016-for-Windows-6c41b5a8-7dfd-4c6a-811e-5c167729c4d9
You canβt, MS has improved the scanner out of 2016 β¦ You have to retrograde upgrade back to the Radial version of OneNote or OneNote 2007 which is part of the Picture Manager / SharePoint installer

Do the app and Office version share files? If not, how can I transfer them to each? Thank you in advance.

I don’t want either. I would like to be able to uninstall onenote2016
So, is no-one going to mention the irony in having 2 (or 3 including the radial version) applications call “ONEnote”?
That is ironic indeed. π
Why is it that my one note on laptop not syncing with my one note on desktop? ive been trying for hours now geez
Do you use the same Microsoft account on both?
All very confusing. I have databases set up in OneNote 2007 and I need to be able to access them!

There is also another feature that many people miss, that is being able to automatically insert scanned images into OneNote. That is another thing MS “improved” out of the application. The good news, that is another version you can still get and install, to have 3 or even 4 versions of OneNote, each with special features on your machine …
This question has links to download 2007 with the scanner:

Thank you Ron, we’ve inserted a note in the article with the information you shared.
OneNote Desktop App is also free and can be downloaded directly from Onenote.com.
Thank you, Kent. We’ve updated the article to show that.
