Useless. I want to download pictures from microsoft Wallpapers – very nice. But there is no simple way of storing them in my computer. First the browser only shows me the picture, then I have to save it, find the right folder (wich this site helped me with) BUT no account in my computer has the right to store new files in theese folders. Not even when logged in as an administrator. I can create a new folder, but not strore any files in it.
So in the end I didnt get _anywhere_

In response to jonteman:

You need to first take ownership of the folder. First navigate to your Windows folder then right click on the Web folder and click Properties. Go to the Security tab and then click the Advanced button near the bottom. Now click on the Owner tab and you will see the Current owner is listed as “Trusted Installer” which is Micro$oft’s super-user account to keep control of your OS. Click the Edit button, select the Administrators under “Change owner to” and make sure to check the box on the bottom “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects” and then click OK. Click OK again on the Advanced Security Settings window then on the Web Properties window click on Administrators in the top pane and make sure “Full control” is checked in the bottom pane. If not click edit and check that box.

You now own this folder and can do anything you want with it. I usually repeat these steps with my entire C partition when I first install Windows, because it’s my computer not Trusted Installer’s computer.

Hope this helps, cheers.

I don’t know if it helped the rude individual above, but it certainly helped me! Thank you

Hi,
In my windows 8.1 is displaying an unwanted image as the lock screen wallpaper. I tried changing it but it keeps defaulting to it after restart. I have checked C:Windowsweb folder but this image is not in there. Please help in getting rid of this unwanted image and to set it back to the default image permanently.
Many thanks
RR

The same is happening to me. Even with the image file deleted it still appears on my lock screen. ?

Thomas

I need similar help to the above with the lock screen. I chose lock screen during different seasons, but want to clear them out. I can’t find where they are stored in order to do so (they are NOT in the WEB folder with the theme wallpapers). I am able to put in new ones, but the old previews still show up.

Just trying to help

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsSystemDataS-1-5-18ReadOnlyLockScreen_Z That is where you will find that annoying default lock screen…you will need to take ownership of the folder to manipulate the files within.

How do I do this? Whenever I try to open the systemdata folder it tells me I don’t have permission, and when I go to the security settings and change the folder from read only, it still tells me I don’t have permission to access that folder.

The previous post is correct: “C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsSystemDataS-1-5-18ReadOnlyLockScreen_Z That is where you will find that annoying default lock screen…you will need to take ownership of the folder to manipulate the files within.” You will also find older lock screens in similar folders (S-1-5-etc). You will need to take ownership of EVERY file & folder) to delete.
Google “Take Ownership” for a program that allows you to do this; changing from “Read Only” won’t work.

John

I’m still having the same problem. I was able to take ownership and open the folders but the photos won’t budge. I try to copy and I get the message that says PC has blocked photo, even the thumbnail won’t show what the picture is.

THANKS A LOT MAN YOU MADE MY DAY

The only reason it didn’t help me is because it is only related to what I’m actually looking for. What want is the location of the images that I have set as my desktop through the right click menu on the web. Sometimes I wish to alter or save this and I don’t want to have to find it online again.

Thomas Purdin

Where the desktop wallpapers are depends on which browser you are using.
I use Firefox, so they are in “C:Users(my name)AppDataRoamingMozillaFirefox”
If using Internet Explorer, they are in “C:Users(my name)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet Explorer.”
If you click on the desktop, select Personalize, then select Desktop Backgrounds, it will show the address of where the internet wallpaper is.
NOTE: you can only have 1 at a time; each new one will replace the other as “Wallpaper.BMP”. However, you can copy it anywhere & name as wished.

Thank You!! Windows 8.1 system–with ‘Search’ now essentially useless for whatever reason, (‘Everywhere’ the default?? Try searching for ‘Windows Desktop Backgrounds’) and an hour of frustration, I was finally able to add new wallpaper on my wife’s computer. After all these years, MS buries it this deep?? Makes my Linux systems look simple.

User_nameThis PCWindows8_OS (C:)WindowsWebScreen –or Wallpaper–and then the ‘Themes’ seen under ‘Personalization’)

I’ve been running MS software since, well, before Windows, but moved to Linux a year ago, and don’t intend to go back to MS because of this type of nonsense–every–version–upgrade. Life is too short for this useless silliness. In all fariness, I’d forgotten it has been under Windows/Web for some years–even though it has NOTHING to do with the WWW. I usually just added a folder under my user_name, and added files as desired. Simple. And it’s again different in WinX!! You can only select the FOLDER, not individual files. There is a neat CLI shortcut that runs the Windows 7 wallpaper selection version–perhaps the best version ever, certainly all that’s needed.
