I have windows 8.1 and hp printer officejet 6700 my printer was working fine but now all of a sudden it says I can only print from apps-I have ix11 and 32and 64bit using a wireless setup

I fixed mine by pressing ctrl+P, and in the box to the left, I noticed it was saving it to pdf. I clicked the CHANGE button and it brought up my printer and a lot of other options. I chose my network printer (hp 6700) and it change the destination from “save to pdf” to my printer. It works great now, but when I go to devices > print, it still says “You can only print from apps”. Whatever, it works fine now. I sure hope this helps.

I wish someone would answer your question Paul. I am having the same issue. I used to be able to print from Word on the desktop, and now it shows the printer, but when I select it I get an error. When I try to access the printer, it says “can only print from apps”? How do I get it to print from the desktop apps?!? I tried using Print and selecting the printer (which shows as Ready), but it errors every time. Can’t someone help?

I have a similar issue but when I get to the “charms” and select my printer, it says it cannot connect to my printer and that I should check to make sure it’s connected. It shows the valid printer but will not allow me to print.

I can not even get my printer to show under devices. It shows as the default printer. I have connected to groups, the wifi is on. It will not even show that the WIFI is recognizing my printer. I updated drivers etc. It seems to print some things fine. But it will not show up under devices. How do I get it to show back up under devices. It says the same thing. It can only print from APPS.

I think I have inadvertently done something to my window print settings as everything in word docs is now showing both preview and printing in a tiny font and only three quarters across the page. Am tearing my hair out as I am an author and need desperately to print some pages of a book I am writing.

How do your revert the setting on the printer to be able to print from desktop. I get a msg saying I can only print from apps and I want to change it back.

What is the point of asking a question and it doesn’t get answered? ‘You can only print from Apps.’ is driving me up the wall and nobody seems to know how to fix it!

Having the same problem “can only print from apps.” ?????

I have a slightly different issue. My printer seems to have set up fine, but I have lost the ability to set up Print Preview. I prefer to see the preview of what is going to print before actually printing, so that no paper is wasted. This option was available on my last systems Win XP and Win 7, but not available in Win 8.1.

In windows 8.1 you click on the alt on your keyboard and then at the top of the page, click on file. Scroll down and its there. That’s the way I get to it in windows 8.1 Good luck.

For the issue for “can only print from apps” – Kept getting errors also regarding the printer. How old is the printer that is connected to the PC? USB cord may not be compatible with 3.0 port. Connect to a 2.0 port; should be able to print from “FILE” option. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

It’s a newer printer and it’s set up wirelessly. It’s been a while since I had this issue and actually changed computers since then, but I believe the issue was with the spooler service being disabled when I upgraded. Finally got it to work, but I believe I had to manually restart the service.

Racked my brain trying to figure out how to print a copy of an email I had saved to the file Explorer. Looked at many web sites, including MIcrosoft. No help. But you nailed it…….. ctrl+P…… did the trick.
Many, many thanks!!!!!!

At last, a simple way to access a basic print site that includes sizing the doc, the way print sites back in the day worked. However, the print came out with an all orange tint while the original was black and white. What gives?
