I’ve found that you can set up a TP Link smart plug (HS110, HS100, etc.) without setting up a Kasa account – simply proceed as Guest and don’t login or create an account.
And there is software available (Home Assistant) for a variety of platforms including Windows and Linux.
What I don’t know is the “security factor” of doing it this way – someone smarter than I regarding security would have to comment.

That’s wright using 2.5 GHz is old school. Do you know a smart plug which support 5.0 GHz 802.11ac networks?
It stinks don’t recommend this at all extremely hard won’t connect.
