Trying to think when I’ve really needed to do this; hard disk serial change, yes. If I want my ISP to issue a new IP, I may want to spoof my MAC address on my router. Two of the same MAC addresses on a network = chaos. So what’s the intended purpose for changing a MAC address–why would your audience want to do this? Much easier to use the software made for changing MACs and restoring default.

Hi jasray,

Thanks for the comment. There are various cases when you might need to change your MAC address. For instance, you might need to connect to a secured private network (from your laptop, for example) and the administrator has a list of predefined MAC addresses which he is allowed to grant access to.

Here’s another example from my personal experience: you’re connected to a local ISP and your network adapter gets fried during a storm. Instead of calling the ISP and requesting a new IP lease for your new network adapter, you can just set the new adapter’s MAC address to the old one, so that you don’t need to waste time calling and waiting.

I’m sure you can dig up some other reasons 🙂

Thanks for reading us and see you around!
