I am using Win 7 Home Premium and I don’t have Sticky Notes (?). How can I add it?

Ciprian

Go to C:Windowssystem32StikyNot.exe and then make a shortcut to in on your desktop.

Thomas

Thanks for the tip. Found it and have created shortcuts.

Ty Buchanan

Don’t bother mate! The links in a note do not go anywhere. They are underlined in blue but they do not work.

Donna

Thomas, I too have Windows 7 Home Premium. I found sticky notes under Accessories. Glad you were able to take care of your problem. Now I’m going to have fun.

Susan

I just bought a dell laptop with windows 7 home premium and I’ve typed sticky notes into my search, I’ve went to the link provided there is no sticky notes on my pc. What do I do now. I just exchanged a compaq with the same windows that had sticky notes for a more expensive Dell laptop same windows but no sticky notes. Please help……

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

What do you mean by ” i have went to the link provided” and then by “there is no sticky notes”.
When you search for “sticky notes” into the Start Menu search box – do you get any results? If yes, what happens when you click on the Sticky Notes shortcut?

Tony

I often like to cut and copy text into sticky notes temporarily but get get frustrated when Sticky Nores automatically minimizes each time I click back into the open window. Is there a way to keep Sticky Notes ‘on top’ until I’ve finsished working with them?
thanks.

adam

I can bring up sticky notes but it only allows an audio note or a scratch note. I’ve looked at options and fine no way to change it to add a typed note. I’ve asked other co-workers and they all are able to type in a note, and have tried to change my sticky note with no results. appreciate any assistance. Thank you

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

I think you are using a different product, not the built-in Sticky Notes for Windows 7. The Sticky Notes from Windows do not have options for creating audio or scratch notes. Only plain text notes.

I had 2 sticky notes on my desktop. I had pinned sticky notes to the taskbar. I had an IT person come down and fix an outlook issue (unrelated). The IT person unpinned sticky notes & closed the sticky notes on my desktop. Now I do not know where to find them. Can you help?

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Open Sticky Notes using the instructions shown in this article. If they are visible when the application is open, then you are in luck. If not, it means he deleted your notes and you need to recover them from the recycle bin.
If they are not there either, you can use a file recovery application. This guide will help: http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-recover-accidentally-deleted-files

Hi I work in a office sticky notes has been a great help in reducing the paper around the office there use to be paper sticky notes everywhere. However there are two different logins on one computer we use. one for receptionist and the other for bookeepers if the receptionts need to leave a note for bookkeppers they have to pin it on thier screen because they do not have the login for bookkeepers. Is there a way to pin so different users can see the notes ?

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Not by default. Sticky Notes are saved on a “per user account” basis. Each user can access only its own sticky notes. Only if everyone would use the same user account to log in, they would be able to view the notes.

You could save the notes to a different folder on your computer, where everyone has access.

Read this article: Useful Tips & Tricks for Sticky Notes. There is a section on how to Backup your Notes. You can manually copy your notes to a different folder and ask the others to look there and save their notes there too.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Wendy – I am very happy to report that I have found a way. I just published the tutorial here: How to Sync Sticky Notes Across Users and Computers in 7 Steps.

Follow it closely and you will have the functionality you need.

I m using windows 7 Home Basic
I found Sticky Notes Application in C:Windowswinsxsamd64_microsoft-windows-stickynotes-app_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_493ba8a4d2fc9697

I search in system32 folder but there is nothing related to sticky notes…
I tried all the solution but its not working..

Trish

How many sticky notes may you have? I have a few and when I try to make a new sticky note, I see nothing…

Wasif Sadi

How can I keep my sticky notes in windows 7 professional always on top / visible?

joe

can you print the sticky notes from the screen

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

No you cannot. Copy and paste a note to Word or Wordpad and print it from there.

Knitnut

Really cool tool. Now if I could selectively minimize some sticky notes while keeping others open. Right now I have “all” or “none” options. Not good enough.

lizface

Yeahh does anyone know how to keep the sticky notes on top of other open pages?
I’m kind of super obsessed with sticky notes… but the best part is that you can stick them where they’re always in front of your face. Can these do that too please?

Christina Pavlou

Hallo I use sticky notes the last couple of weeks and i find that it’s a great tool!
Only I have a question: I have 7 or 8 different sticky notes. They do not appear all sticky notes at the same time on the desktop. What I see is 2 or 3 every time and when I click to the arrows the next 2 or 3 appear. Could it be possible that i organize my sticky notes like groups, for example i want to appear on the desktop sticky notes with the name Monday Tuesday Wednesday and then when i click on the arrows to appear Thursday Friday Saturday. At that moment they appear randomly like Monday, Friday, Thursday. Thank you very much for your time and your response.

Brandon

How do I save a Sticky note. I dont want to have to uninstall it and install stickies instead but I will.

Carol Sears

I have a touch screen computer, but I always use a mouse, not my finger. I accidentally scribbled on my sticky note with my finger and now I cannot get rid of the “scribble”. Will I have to delete the sticky note and re-create it? The scribble didn’t show up anywhere else on my screen, just on the sticky note, so that’s why I think it is a sticky note issue.

Jennifer

Can I set the sticky note accessory to automatically open every time I turn on my computer?

KueTee

Hi Jennifer,
Yes create a stickynotes shortcut and drag the shortcut to your programs startup folder. To find your start up folder… 1. Copy this link… C:Users(YourUserName)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup (works on Windows 8 as well) 2. Open your ‘My Computer’ folder. 3. Go to the address field and highlight the text and paste the link and hit Enter. 4. Drag your Sticky notes shortcut into this folder. 5. Close the folder and restart your computer. Be patient, your sticky notes should pop up when your computer comes back up and every time you turn your computer on. Hope this helps.

JIM PARKER

Can Sticky be sent to another computer on a server or is their another program to use

NEUTRON

Should I close StickyNotes when I turn off my laptop or is it okay if I just leave it there? I don’t want to rewrite a note whenever I turn on my laptop so I mostly just leave it unclosed.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

It is OK to close it. It is OK to leave it. The only thing that matters is your personal preference.

Megan

So I have a touch screen and I can write with my finger but how do I erase what I’ve wrote with out having to start over?

Kuetee

Megan,
Highlight the contents on your note (Ctrl+A). Right click and select “Copy”. Open a new Sticky Note, right click and select “Paste”. Your new note will not have the finger scribble. Hope this helps.

Roger

Hi, I had several important sticky notes on a laptop that died last week. It was running Windows 7. I can access the hard drive using a USB enclosure.

Can I retrieve the texts of the reminders that were on the desktop? Some were really quite important but I don’t know how to get the details back, thanks

Laszlo Nemes

Every data of Sticky Notes is stored in this file: %APPDATA%MicrosoftSticky NotesStickyNotes.snt
So if you want to migrate it to another computer, copy this file. If you want to reset all your Sticky Notes windows, just delete (rename) this file.

Roger

Thanks Laszlo for the quick reply 🙂 I have tried to retrieve the file but for some reason the AppData folder is hidden on the hard drive and although the ‘Hide Hidden Files and Folders’ option is unticked I cannot get to the hidden folders 🙁

Any idea how I can view these files?

Thanks again,

Roger

Paris

Okay so I used my Wacom Tablet and I accidentally drew on the sticky notes, is there any way to erase the drawings? (The pen on my tablet doesn’t come with an eraser)

Laszlo Nemes

Roger: I use Total Commander from ghisler.com , it shows hidden and system files, too.
Paris: use Ctrl-Z (repeatedly) to undo – as usual in many Windows programs.

roger

Hi Laszlo,

Thanks for that tip – I shall try it in the next half hour and see if it can help me!

Roger

Roger

Sorry Laszlo

If you are still online and see this reply, and if you have a moment to spare, can you tell me how to view hidden files on Total Commander? I have it running now and can see the contents of the hard drive taken from the old laptop, but when I go to UsersRoger it is still not showing AppData

I cannot see at a glance how I can get into this hidden folder

Hopefully you will see this message soon, with many thanks,

Roger

Laszlo Nemes

Roger, in TotalCommander,”Configuration”/”Options” menu,on the left choose “Display”,on the right set “Show hidden files”, set “Show system files”. In “Layout” I use to set “Show button bar”,”Show drive buttons”,”Show two…”

Laszlo Nemes

about .snt file. Now I realized, that we just need cmd.exe to manage the StickyNotes file: open cmd.exe window, type “cd /d %APPDATA%MicrosoftSticky Notes”, then you can rename or any.

Roger

Thanks Laszlo. Sorry to have taken so much of your time. I will experiment and hope to report success shortly,

thanks again,

Roger

Roger

Sad to say Laszlo that even after setting TotalCommander to reveal hidden files the folders I want to see do not show up. I fear the data is locked away for ever.

Thanks for all your suggestions anyway.

Best wishes, Roger

Roger

Laszlo, I have just re-read your last message, and before I give up completely I would like to try this suggestion. However I am not good the CMD function. Could you please tell me the exact text I need to type at the CMD prompt to copy the .snt file to my C:? The laptop drive shows in Windows Explorer as J:DEAD LAPTOP DRIVEUsers etc.
If I successfully copy the file will it still be hidden, even though my C: drive hidden folders and files are visible?

Laszlo Nemes

Roger, as I wrote on 16.03 : Sticky Notes stores all its data in this file: “%APPDATA%MicrosoftSticky NotesStickyNotes.snt” – it is our destination. You wrote that you can see the dead disk as J:
So do the following:
1. cmd.exe
2. cd /d “J:DEAD LAPTOP DRIVEUsersRogerAppdata”
(Appdata folder is hidden, you cannot see it, but you can navigate to it if you give explicit folder name.)
3. cd “RoamingMicrosoftSticky Notes”
(we did it in 2 steps for easier understanding)
4. dir
(It shows you the StickyNotes.snt file.)
5. copy StickyNotes.snt C:
(not necessary to use C:, but it is easier for you to follow the steps)
6. copy C:StickyNotes.snt “%APPDATA%MicrosoftSticky Notes”
8. dir “%APPDATA%MicrosoftSticky Notes”
(It shows you the StickyNotes.snt file.)
9. You can close the black cmd.exe window.
10. “Start” button , Run this: Sticky Notes

Roger

Hi Lazslo,

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. Unfortunately I cannot test this at present but will do so as soon as I can and will let you know the result. I am feeling guardedly confident that you have given me the answer I need, and thanks again,

Best wishes, Roger

Roger

Hello Lazslo

I am so sorry to have left it so long before answering your last message – I have been away from home but am now back and have immediately followed your instructions.

All went well up to the point where I saw the contents of the folder Sticky Notes and as you predicted the file StickyNotes.snt shows to be 14,848 bytes. However after the command to copy I get the response “Access is denied 0 file(s) copied.”

Is there a switch I can add to the copy command that will allow the file to be copied? This is the nearest I have ever got to a solution and I hope you can suggest something to get me over the last hurdle!!

Thanks once again for your invaluable assistance, and my apologies for not acting on your advice sooner,

Best wishes,

Roger

Roger

Hi Laszlo

If you see my message above, and reply, I should let you know that for some reason I am no longer seeing the Sticky Notes file as before! I am using the CMD command (running as administrator) and can Dir the User folder but AppData is no longer showing. The screen shows:

H: DEAD LAPTOP DRIVEUsersPatricia>cd /d “AppData”
The system cannot find the path specified.
H: DEAD LAPTOP DRIVEUsersPatricia>

I am not sure what I can have done to change things or if I am doing anything differently this time, can you help me again please?

Thanks,

Roger B

Roger

Hi again,

My apologies for the delay in returning to this thread. I have spent many hours in vain trying to access the AppData folder on the copied contents of the rescued hard drive and in frustration decided to try once again to access the folder on the original hard drive, now in a USB enclosure. Wonder of wonders, this time it opened and I could copy the data files as I initially intended.

I really cannot explain why this worked this time when all previous attempts failed. I wish I had a clear understanding of what happened so that I could post the solution for the benefit of anyone who finds this thread when searching for a solution to their own problem.

My sincere thanks to all who have considered this problem and for the suggestions offered,

Best regards,

Roger

Hi, I don’t know if this is a glitch from when I had just closed Flash CC, but the drawing tool was still there and for some reason, I could draw on all my sticky notes. Because I was testing the feature out, now all my notes have scribbles on them and I don’t know how to erase them. I tried control + z, but it didn’t work. Please help!

I have quite a few sticky notes sitting on my desktop. Whenever I log off on my account and log back on, the sticky notes move into different positions and I have to spend time painstakingly moving them back to their positions. Is there a way to stop them moving?

David Rencher

I have the same question, but I don’t see that you received a reply. Did you figure this out? If so, can you please share?

Windows 11 Update

Thanks for this nice and helpful post. Thanks for share all details about Sticky Notes. I like your post.

Judith shores

My sticky enlarges by itself so every time I bring up my desk top I have to scroll around the sticky to find my notes. I see them on other peoples computers and the words of the notes are automatically showing . How can I see my notes without having to scroll through this elongated sticky note? Or stop the sticky from automatically enlarging?

Dan

Is there a “sticky notes” that will attach to ANYTHING, like a website or a blog or anything else you may want to return to?
(And not only attach, but stay attached until you remove it)?

Monica

My sticky notes doesnt work on my dell inspiron laptop. Anyone could help?

george

How to I make the slide bar darker? its really hard to see. @ any color set.

Sally

How do it select a highlighted color on sticky notes? Right now all I have is bright pink.

Hi team,
I had created sticky notes on desktop with some notes. But unfortunately i formatted my disk. Whether they were synced anywhere or can i get those notes back?

Jack

WIth windows 7 sticky notes, can you copy and past hand written text or attach sticky note to email?

Jack

if you change the text (underline, bold, italicized) to quickly you mess up your sticky notes and they will freeze up on you

LD Bjorn

I had Windows 7 and loved the sticky notes. I used to check off what I’d accomplished. The sticky notes in Windows 10 doesn’t seem to have a checkmark option. Is there a way to get the checkmark (or go back to the Windows 7 version–I liked the font better too!)

Amy

Hi
Is it possible to save a sticky note in a folder on windows?

nichan

Highlist the contents of the Stiky Note, then open a text editor or notepad and paste all contents into it and then save it somewhere you want, as a backup. To avoid losing it in case of having to reinstall or format OS drive, you can also save it as well on a USB or external backup drive. Every time any contents gets deleted or added, best procedure is save it using the same procedure. This would overwrite or replace your earlier saved note. Hope this helps.

Danny

while using the companion 2 (windows 8) most of the time sticky notes will no t allow me to write with the pen… but occasionally it does and I cant seem to find a key command to switch from text to freewriting … it registers my finger touch as a freewriting command but not the pen… i also sticky notes with my surface pro 4 and it works very well with that machine.. any ideas?

Mike Spurr

Ctrl+shift+L does not produce a bullet list in sticky notes

crystal geng

I know how to use sticky notes. My question is I want to put my accumulation of sticky notes in a new folder ON my desktop, I don’t know how do it.

Anonymous

Microsoft Sticky Notes on Windows 10 no longer seems to support the following hotkeys:
Increase font size: Ctrl+Shift+>
Decrease font size: Ctrl+Shift+
Capitalize (or otherwise) highlighted letters: Ctrl+Shift+A
Right align: Ctrl+R
Center align: Ctrl+E
Left align: Ctrl+L
Single line space: Ctrl+1
Double line space: Ctrl+2
1.5 line space: Ctrl+5

Seems like a simple straightforward aide memoire system so I’ll use it.
