Wonderful explanation. My work place is still focused on Windows 10 and I am still learning more and more productivity features to get my wiggling digits to move more quickly. 🙂
ok, so i didn’t reboot but foundanother qatitems key , and deleted it. Also deleted some recent items items as shown below. Not clear which of this fixed it, but its back!
Pretty sure this is an unreported windows 10 bug. im up to date with patches as of 6/25/2023
Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1416217229-229596720…\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Ribbon
–>qatitems – delete it
del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*
del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\*
del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\*
would you believe that I managed to break explorer by adding something to the QAT? now explorer.exe it crashes immediately on open and takes everything with it, like the taskbar etc. I just cant even get in to explorer to fix it!
I opened “control folders” from the Run box to get to explorer options, reset everything to default there, cleared history etc. No effect.
This feature has never been visible before now. Gotten along without it fine for decades. I clicked a few things and now there it is. Don’t remember what I did. Don’t want it taking up real estate on my screen. Stop trying to sell me on how “useful” it is and tell me how to make it GO AWAY!

I finally went to the registry to delete
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Ribbon\QATitems
And that still didnt fix it!! what! going to try reboot now.

Good article. Are there any limitations to the number of folders that can be in Quick Access?
BRING BACK FAVORITES OR AT LEAST GIVE ME AN OPTION TO USE THAT INSTEAD!!
I CANNOT RENAME QUICK ACCESS LINKS WITHOUT RENAMING THE FOLDER IT’S LINKED TOO!
WHY???????
