I have exceeded the limit to unlink. I went through the skype community all day long. Couldn’t find a solution. What shall I do. Please help

Thank you
Adish

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

The article states the following:

“If you have reached the limit on the number of times you can unlink your Microsoft account, a message is shown, informing you of this problem. You will need to talk to Skype Customer Support to unlink your account.”

Michael

I have unlinked my Microsoft account according to your instructions, but now Windows allows ONLY a Microsoft account in order to sign in from the Skype app. Worse yet, Skype’s login page refuses to go away when attempting to cancel signing in. The app can only be killed in Task Manager. Is there no way around this fascistic demand to ONLY use a Microsoft account — which I never use — in order to use Skype?

Mary Anne

I am having the same issue. I do not want all my accounts linked…but apparently there is no other way to sign into Skype now. I would really appreciate if someone has a solution. I am having the sign into your Microsoft account for my calendar and other apps too, you used to just be able to hit cancel and then log in directly. Please help!

Michael

I’ve finally found the solution. Uninstall your version of Skype, go to Skype.com and install Skype for Desktop instead of Skype for Windows 8. This full version of Skype contains none of the nasty Windows interface that demands a Microsoft account. Enjoy!

Janean

I uninstalled Skype 7.17 for the same reason (don’t want to login/sync via MS account) and installed previous version 6.21. Seemed fine until I quit & tried to log in again. Same problem: cannot log in unless I connect via MS and cannot get out of that screen without killing it via Task Manager. What now?!

Vlad

It’s just so stupid! If those two so “highly integrated” let your MS account be the same as Skype’s. What if I have multiple Skype accounts that I am using for different purposes – like for business, for family, for friends — how to sign-in to those? I don’t understand such approach as to “link” accounts. To me it looks like Skype’s team is doing everything to make their product unacceptable by users.

ana

I have unlinked both accounts and have lost all my contacts in skype. Is there a way of having them back?

Brian

I’m getting increasingly fed up with Microsoft’s arrogance and blatant disregard for 30+ years of research on human-computer interfaces.

I was trying to set up a laptop for my 90 year old father, who suffers from dementia. Needless to say, I needed to “keep everything as simple as possible, but no simpler”, to paraphrase Einstein.

Naturally, this means NO PASSWORD of any kind, anywhere. Because the laptop is physically secure, and will never leave their apartment, this won’t pose a huge risk.

As I was putting the finishing touches on the installation, I decided it would be nice to install Skype so Dad & I can video chat.

BIG mistake…Skype insisted (or seemed to) on password protecting Dad’s login. This is *completely* unacceptable, so now I get to go through all this rigamarole, and try to remove any references to an MS account, anywhere.

Thanks very much for the info!

Ana

I would like to unlink my accounts, however I am worried about my subscription to skype. So far I was able to enter skype without my email address, just my skype name on the desktop, however when I try to go to my subscription ( I wanted to know when it ends ) I’m taken to microsoft….instead of skype. Will this still happen if I unlink the account?

dsfhlaaent

It´s a terrific change – after it automatically linked to my microsoft-account, including my outlook.com account I saw with not one exception all my saved phone-numbers added to some kind of skype-contacts. Of course this will belong to my lumia phone – but that´s terrific. Automatically, out of the blue. Yesterday I unlinked my skype-account as in the description above- today it was linked to it again..although I checked if it was unlinked really by accessing my microsoft-account settings one more time. I commiserate those who can´t find alternatives to microsoft soon. I can only call for Linux – it seems to be uncomfortable but in my opinion everyone that has got the knowledge will switch to it or sth. else in the near future. Those changes are unbearable…governments need more power to set bounds to worsening companies.

You CANNOT do this option, it will not let you from Skype or Microsoft Accounts when you hit the “UNLINK”, the option “is not available”. Very annoying not being able to do the “UNLINK” function. It simply is not working at all.

Bernie

The ‘unlink’ button is no longer available. Not sure when this happened as I had previously unlinked my hotmail account from Skype. But now they’re linked again – I imagine automatically during one of the updates – and the ‘unlink’ option has been removed.

Sarah

I recently reset my password due to spam being sent through to all my contacts and it automatically sinked up my skype and microsoft when I did so. I’ve tried everything but can’t seem to unlink them, nor find the unlink option.

Unlink Skype

You can no longer unlink your Skype account as of 2017. The only option you are left with is to delete your entire Microsoft account (this will delete your Technet, your Office 365, and Hotmail accounts too!) I have confirmed this with Skype support as well as it’s posted on their website. I am so very upset by this as I’ve accidentally “linked” the accounts by downloading the Windows Update (Skype program), don’t wish to have all the Skype junk in my Hotmail or be “published” in the “Skype phone book” but I have no recourse except to delete my 18-year-old Hotmail account! You can add MS services to your account willy-nilly, but can’t remove any; you are stuck with them for life if you do. Horrible. I have learned my lesson and will never sign up for another MS service again!

mina ise

I do not have any unlink button in front of Microsoft email account there on Skype preferences , how the heck I do it then ? I don’t like they both have the same password !

Le Pape

Same problem here… Microsoft forced to to update my skype password, doing that it forced me to link skype with microsoft account (account that I never use, as I have a mac). Now the “unlink” button doesn’t show.

ANGRY

This is HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. I’d avoided doing this for 2 years. But recently had a lot of issues with Skype and then couldn’t login. So tried password reset, and of course, the only way to do so was to link with MS. It was forced down my throat. I hate SKYPE now and, frankly, hate MS, too. Was a Skype user for well over a decade. My next computer will be Apple.

farrukh

my hotmail and skype link now i want unlink both account i complete all the step not showing unlink option

Mane

This solution doesn’t work anymore. The help files say you can’t unlink them anymore. I am gonna stop using skype.

DFMerrifield

It’s all now a part of Windows since they’ve ended the messenger sevice of thier own! I have tried eveything from: Deleting Skype, deleting skype preview app from within Windows 10 and searching non-stop for quite awhile now to stop the auto log-sign in to Skype with all the popups and such!! The only way I have found to be able to check emails without getting signed in to Skype was to use the built in windows “MAIL” app in Windows 10! I don’t really care for it in a way but, at least I’m not getting signed in automatically to Skype and having all those messages pop up anymore! If you do get them when logging into Windows, you can go to settings in your Skype account and turn off sound and noticications and they don’t show up anymore!! Hope this helps!!

K

You cannot unlink your accounts – they are the SAME account now that Microsoft and Skype have made a mess of everything. You are automatically linked to Skype whenever you sign in to your MS account and/or Outlook email. Create a new Outlook account?
Too bad – you get linked to Skype, too.

Microsoft has made the decision for you – you have no choice. They decided everyone should have Skype whether they want it or not. And just for the record, Skype is a scammer and spammer paradise!

I deleted all info and privatized the Skype account as best I could. I even added a fake email address and no name through the Skype website. Unfortunately, it is still linked and the MS website page even has a bullshit response:

“Due to ongoing changes, linking and unlinking of Skype and Microsoft accounts is currently unavailable.”

Do not follow the steps to delete Skype only – it will delete your entire email account as well.

People need to start calling MS and blasting them!!

Anonymous

SOrry to say none of the instruction you gave have enabled me to “UNLINK” my Skype account freom my outlook account. Reason is there is no unlink option in my account settings on skype for microsoft account. Very perplexing.

Fil

Skype is owned by Microsoft, so it is only REASONALBE to use the same account for all their services.
This provides
1) Integration
2) ease of use
3) ease of debug
4) a centralized hub for all your services
5) a much much better user experience because of much much fewer technical problems and incompatibilities.

You want different skype accounts? Make different Microsoft accounts, it’s THAT SIMPLE.
This way you also get to control you information in a much better way.

Stop complaining.

Bee Woman

Just because you like it, doesn’t make it reasonable. Reasonable is letting people decide for themselves what & how they use technology. Stop using odious phrases like “stop complaining” and start minding your own business.

ishtar

I recently realized that my skpe account has been linked WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION to the microsoft account of another person! I cannot access skype from a device different from my old pc/mobile, otherwise I need to send a verification code to the email address of this person whose MS account is wrongly linked to my Skype! This is a horrible violation of users privacy and sensitive data! This person has access to my skype data and can changemy password and prevent me from accessing my skype and contacts any time! And of ourse no way to unlink them! This is unacceptable and needs to be reported to the competenet authorities, national and EU institutions! And you say not to complain about it??? This is crazy, we should all gather and report Microsoft to the competent authorities.

Goran

What if you dont have access to the email of your microsoft account anymore?
It was an email of a company that you worked for and now its non existant?

Milo

I noticed, from time to time, that my Skype account was sending messages to all my contact list with a link in it. I changed my password, but it happened again and again. I detected the account that was doing that. It was an account with the name of “love”. I deleted it from my hotmail right menu linked to Skype (This was the only menu with the “delete” option), but I couldn’t deleted from Skype since there is not a “Remove” or “delete” option, but hide one. The funny things is that, the next time the messages were sent, this “love” account appeared again on both sides hotmail and Skype along with a add request from an unknown person. I just decided to un-link my hotmail and Skype account. Surprisingly, when I did that, I saw the “love” account hidden in my Skype account along with other “deleted” accounts. I could remover it from hotmail and skype easily (this time the remove option was available) and since them, it has been more than 2 years I don’t see these messages,
Today, I found the messages in my Skype again, and “SURPRISINGLY” Microsoft has forced you to LINK your accounts again. My two accounts are linked without me being informed about that, and I see the messages leaving my ibox without any control, and it does not matter if you change your password.
I better move to gmail, it has online chat too, or facebook maybe.

Jeff

pls help

Ruining Skype for so many people is almost as retarded as putting Steve Balmer in charge

Tito

If we were not as savage society we would’ve had laws for things like this. We could’ve sued Microsoft and they would’ve paid for all the time wasted and stress and anger accumulated because of their incompetence and unwillingness to keep the accepted standards by the community.

F you Microsoft!!! you managed to ruin Skype.

Alan Robinson

Thank you Microsoft you have ruined the Skype experience. For some reason my Skype account needs to be linked to MS account i have a Facebook account on my Skype screen and I have NEVER had a Facebook account how the hell did this happen. I use a Mac and cannot get this Facebook/Skype linked account facebook:10159175637610587 to change back to my normal account interface. Totally useless cretins. think I will change ALL my devices to Apple.

Mac

What the hell, man? This wasn’t a “tutorial,” and it definitely didn’t show us how to “UNLINK” a Skype account from a Microsoft account, as the title of your article deceptively implies. All you did was give us links to places where we could whine about how much we HATE having them linked. You’re as bad as Skype! You promise us an actual SOLUTION, but you give us useless crap instead. SHAME ON YOU.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Wow. Did you read what we wrote?
We used to have a tutorial showing how to unlink a Skype account from a Microsoft account. It no longer works because Microsoft (not us), has removed this feature. Then, to provide some help, we did a lot of research about this problem, we explained in detail what happened, why things no longer work and we provided the ONLY ways you can have a small chance of solving this problem.
So, your conclusion is that we are as bad as Skype? If you read this article, you would know that Skype is now Microsoft and Microsoft has decided to remove a feature that you want to use.
Thanks for being awesome!

whatwillithelp

so apparently my skype account has been banned for sending spam, or whatever – i finished a call yesterday, signed out, and when I tried to log back in a bit later, I was asked to give them my phone number so they can send me some verification code (note: I still know my skype username and password); I contacted support to ask why can’t I have the code sent via email, with one caveat – I have no idea which email I used to register my pre-Microsoft Skype account. Apparently there is nothing they can do, they can’t even provide you a hint to the email address for ‘security reasons’. What i’ll do is get a £1 sim card and see if I can recover access to my account, and if I manage that, I’ll see what email it’s linked to and hopefully be able to change it to non-microsoft one. the whole merging thing is a travesty, and Skype functionality has been going down the drain ever since this corporate takeover, but old contacts remain so there’s not much one can do.

whatwillithelp

so all you get when you submit yor email/phone # for a code is another torrent of questions eg your date of birth, name surname etc.

I wasn’t applying for a passport when I signed up to Skype over a decade ago, so I can’t possibly remember what bogus birthday or name – initials most likely – I submitted.

I’ve also established that the email address I had associated with my Skype account no longer exists.

everything is gone now, I don’t even know why, and it pisses me off no end.

Carol Frick

I’m upset that suddenly I started getting numerous vile, vulgar emails since I opened my Skype on my Hotmail account. I followed all the instructions given in other forums. I removed an unwanted contact & thought that would help but still getting vulgar emails because they apparently have my email address which I can’t remove & I really don’t want to change my address.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Block that contact or mark it as spam.

Ron Augustus

For months I have had issues with my outlook acc. both on my phone and PC. I cannot plug my phone in since the plug broke but frequently i’ll look up a person on my phone an out of the blue that contact has been deleted. I have tried for months to fix my outlook contacts on PC but always end up getting crap linked to Skype as well. I recently was able to combine some contacts info but would really like to get the dumb Skype link to my contacts disabled to stop the changes that happen without my knowing its happening. I think the link between my Nokia 810 Win 8 and my PC are messing up my contacts but having Skype is not helping. Plus I do not use Skype.

kiran

want unlink my skype with microsoft account

Anonymoous

Somehow, my Microsoft account is linked to my official Skype. Please help.

BL

I can’t change my skype password without changing my windows logon password… that is ridiculous.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

You Windows logon password (and account) as well as your Skype password (and account) are the same thing: a Microsoft account with the same password. You use your Microsoft account to log into any Microsoft service.

JB

In this feature privacy no longer exists .Many would like the old version with not sharing there privacy with all.

Margaret

Every time I try to get into Skype I am now forced to got thro Microsoft a/c and every time I am told password is incorrect and have to reset it. HAve now done this 4 times!! When I get into Skype my contact list (except for 1 contact) has disappeared along with the $24 AUD credit I had with the old Skype. I want to unlink my account from Microsoft and get mt credit restored or refunded. Microsoft has stuffed up what used to be a perfectly good program.

s

It doesn’t work, talking to the customer support doesn’t work. Please update your misleading article

Leslie

I lent my computer to someone in the library who asked to borrow to check her email. My skype (for business) account was open at the time. She quickly went to her microsoft account to open her email and just kept saying OK to all microsoft questions to get to her account. Thus my skype and her microsoft got linked! I tried to unlink, got in touch with her for her to unlink. Nothing was possible. I had to open a new skype account and she has my old one! A nightmare. Luckily I was able to cancel my credit card info, tell all my contacts about my new account but find it unheard of that Microsoft can link the accounts without even asking for a password! Just a quick click and I lost 8 years of business conversations, my skype name, and all conversations. Should be illegal to do this!

Mitch

microsoft is Communism company
I can’t unlink skype and microsoft account

Heli

Microsoft should be aware, that by stealing millions of Skype users date, it breaches GDPR by far, and should immediately recreate the Unlink button and delete all the data STOLEN by merge action.
A good idea would be a Class action (woks as petition) against Microsoft on the Skype dapa stealing case.
Regards.

Anonymous

Microsoft did not steal Skype data. Microsoft bought Skype, owns Skype, and the data of all Skype users.

LA

This inability to unlink from Microsft truly SUCKS, and is akin to forcing users to be Microsoft clients/customers. It also doesn’t work as well as previously, so much for MS’s touted “services”.
Oh, well… I guess we’ll be forced to use Apple Facetime, and try to teach THAT to my 90 yr. old mother, who still uses Skype…

xiufish

it is a total disaster for me. My skype account is now linked to microsoft account, which seems to be selected (maybe by me…no idea) to be based on UK and put me under 18 years old..I could not use my skype because I am deemed to be ‘under age’. one way out is to input my credit card number to prove i am an adult…but my credit card is not from UK, which in the system is no way to be changed…
I have written them an email asking what to do… no response…
well, I am stuck here and simply can not access skype
it is a shame and beyond description for a company to provide such a service….

Lennart

Not only did I not want the new format Skype, and not only did I not want all my hundreds of old contact addresses in Outlook(Hotmail) on my skype account, but what happened is when Microsoft linked them together, they deleted my outlook password and replaced it with my Skype password,…and only by chance did it occur to me to try this out, altogether very unprofessional and frankly pathetic

Lennart

Could not open my Outlook account, due to “wrong password”, then I get a message from Outlook saying my password had been changed, (not by them), when in fact they had when they linked my outlook account to my skype account, changing my password in outlook to my skype password, hereunder my message in reply to outlook “Sorry, but you changed my password when you linked my skype account to my outlook account, without telling me, it was only by pure chance that I worked out that this may have happened, ie, that my outlook account password was now my skype password. Now I assume that if I change my Outlook account back to its original password, then that changes my skype password to the same. What about security?, to quote common wisdom “never use the same passwords from different accounts”,…very bad

Isa DesOsiers

I used Skype from the beginning. Wonderful product, everyone love it, it was revolutionary in linking loved ones and friends all over the world. Then Microsoft purchased and ruined it. I seem to have two accounts with Microsoft for Skype, one original and one with my msn email, and maybe two different credit cards attached to these accts, which is worrisome as their dummy websites won’t let me see my credit card info for my Skype account either. The whole way they have dumbed down all the Microsoft products for us power users is simply appalling, and now I can still log into skype with my Skype Acct User Name and probably a different one with my msn email address and password. Because I unlinked in a very complicated annoying process several years ago. This is a mess, as you know. I have problems again as of my forces update today, 13 July 2018.

Anonymous

Their approach was indeed unfortunate.

Christine

Was searching how to unlink Skype from Microsoft and came across your website. Until a few days ago I was able to use a different password for each, now suddenly that is no longer an option. Will try your suggestion to contact Microsoft and complain. I prefer to have accounts separate, not linked together.

Lisa

It took MONTHS to unlink the Microsoft account I was coerced into creating when they took over Skype. I was given conflicting info and it almost drove me round the twist, but I am tenacious and kept on until three months later the two accounts were finally separated and I was left with a Skype account and no Microsoft account. I continued to receive emails from Microsoft and this too took time to be completely clear of any association BUT (does my but look big in this sentence) just now, I clicked on the Skype app on my iPhone and was asked to verify my mobile number. I’ve used Skype through my phone many times before now, and when I entered the four digit number to verify, I was told that my Microsoft and Skype accounts were now linked. I am furious and tired of the underhanded tactics used by Microsoft to recruit people to its services. I will be wasting more time tomorrow when the offices of Skype and Microsoft are open to request once more that this Microsoft account be deleted and all details be removed from Microsoft’s database. It is unethical and immoral for organisations to be taking liberties with our personal data and I am in full support of any action you take to hold them accountable.

Annoyed and frustrated

This problem with MS linking with Skype is really annoying and frustrating! I’ve had my Skype account for over ten years, and now it’s become my husband’s Skype all because at some stage he borrowed my Skype account by logging in through his MS-signed-in PC and it just got tied to his email address (MS account). I have only ever signed into Skype using my ID and I don’t log my PC into Microsoft, even though I use Windows. I do use OneDrive and have a Microsoft account, but now we can’t even change the account Skype is linked to from my husband’s Microsoft account to my own Microsoft account. Why on earth should I have to go through the annoying process of contacting customer service or whatever just so they can ask me a whole load of personal questions, when all they need to do is let us choose which account to link Skype to. It’s clumsy and messy and really really unprofessional!

Anonymous

I understand your pain, and you are correct. They should have handled this better.

Onur

Today, i found that Microsoft is now automatically linking existing Skype-only IDs as Microsoft accounts as you can see from Account Details section after you log into Skype Web. They do this harrasment WITHOUT any prompt and seems mandatory action. Now almost every Skype account is recognized as Microsoft accounts and existing Microsoft accounts are automatically affiliated with Skype without any prompt.

Microsoft pissed me off and i have no will to use Skype any longer as they completely ruined the platform including the client.

eduedp

Same problem here. It’s been almost 3 years i lost my skype account.
From time to time I come back here to see if microsoft has done something about the issue.
Anybody ?

Avner Falk

I have the same issue. Microsoft will not let me close my old Microsoft account without also closing my linked Skype account and losing my hundreds of contacts. There is no way to import them into my new Skype account. The BBB seems helpless. This is outrageous. The only recourse is to take this case to the U.S. and European agencies that regulate Microsoft.

Anonymous

On your old Microsoft account, go to Outlook.com, and export all your contacts. Then, on your new Microsoft account, import them.
