This is no longer an option for W10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update), as it causes a nasty bug where the contents side of File Explorer now has a BLACK background and you can hardly see anything. Re-enabling the ribbon does NOT fix it. Only way I managed to revert back is with a system file check scan.

If the Ribbon is shown, after some hours all my Windows Explorer windows freeze or have display bugs (ribbon is not displayed, content of the Explorer is missing or have text uses other font/size/bold, …). It is like this on 2 of my computers. Maybe because I have many windows opened on my Synology NAS? Anyway it is working well when the ribbon is closed for EVERY windows in Windows Explorer.

I’m new to Windows 10 and absolutely loathe the ribbon intruding everywhere. I don’t like the amount of space it takes up to start with on the screen but also I find the icons childish. Windows 7 is much more efficient. File, edit, view etc on a series of tabs at the top, together with drop down lists, is just much nicer to work with than these childish space wasters. I’ve worked out how to make them disappear but I have to have them back when I need their functions.
Users should have the option of which system they like rather than Microsoft forcing this onto users. It’s simply not acceptable but then MS have removed a lot of good things about W7 and replaced with stupid things.

Further to my comments above, it seems that I’ve had my W7 configued to look like WXP all this time. So Microsoft allowed the user to alter the OS to suit what they liked once upon a time. How things have changed.

In all actuality, It seems manipulating the ribbons is the closest I could get to my main goal…. which is to do away with File Explorer in it’s entirety. Why? I have this unfulfilled desire to install Folder Vault but File Explorer simply refuses to hold hands and accept it as a friend. I had no trouble getting rid of Microsoft Edge a while back so I figured it would be just as doable with File Explorer. Not so.

Thank you so much for the easy to understand instructions. Screen shots are always very much a[preciated and I love that you have used plain language that people of all skill levels can understand. Thank you for taking the time to make a great, helpful article.
