You didn’t explain how to switch to the windows 7 or 8 version of category view, you had my hopes up, and then smashed them. I only ever use category view, and windows 10 ruins it, making it impossible to access certain things using it. And the Settings isn’t much better. Worse, even.
Please help me out here, I’m sure you can sympathize.

    Codrut,

I’d say you’re in the minority. I liked XP, 10 is a navigational nightmare and I sure like the Classic Large icons 100 x’s better.

I have every way I could find a suggested solution to making the control panel open permanently in icon view but it never stays that way./ It always reverts to the category display which I really dislike

Setting Small Icon view as default in Win10 Creators Update doesn’t appear to work. There’s no ‘All Item’ view option under the View / Go To. And my registry actually has CP set to view All Items by default (without me changing anything), but it doesn’t work with that setting either.

I was however able to create a shortcut of the All Item View and add it to my Start Menu. And I have to restart to test, but I may have added it successfully to the Start Menu buttons Right-Click menu, in place of the Win10 Settings App (if this works I’ll remove the Start Menu link).

Category View irritates me immensely, and always has, as I’ve been using Win since 3.1, and I know what all the settings do, I just can’t get to them easily via Category… too many clicks.

Thanks – good little overview of classic Control Panel on Win 7.
It’s always a pain getting used to new interfaces.
    I’m amazed it’s as easy as …Small Icons… 🙂
