Notepad doesn’t use the concept of pages, therefore you can’t count them. Word does that and you can count them there.

Thank you for such an easy to understand language about notebook. I have seen it pop up once in a blue moon, but never knew anything about it, let alone find where it is. Not I understand and am definitely going to use it for those short notes or whatever. So simple to use, but not if you have no clue to what it is. 🙂

I am a C++ programmer, so basically I use Notepad every single day – it comes as a perfect addition to my software developing set of programs.

Using Win 10 Notepad. Something has caused the text box to move too far to the left. Using arrow <-> to try to move it back to the right only takes it so far over, not far enough so a big part of the left of the box is still offscreen. How to move it back to the right?

No page breaks appear on monitor. How can you view page breaks to avoid “widows and orphans” and to permit printing one page out of an entire document?

Did you know about the Notepad “.LOG” functionality?
If the first line in a file reads “.LOG” then when you open it with Notepad the current date & time is automatically appended to the end of the file and the insert goes to the next line ready for you tell Notepad what you want to log. You can use this for (very basic) logging purposes – I have had people use it for a simple timesheet tracking tool in the past with this functionality.
This has been part of Notepad since at least Windows 95 days, possibly even Windows 3.1.

Lately, it is taking me a bit longer for the file to save. I never had this problem before. I don’t have the lag with Word. Any solutions for this? Thanks.

  • david says:

Very basic is there a more in depth one?

  • Philip says:

Good tutorial. You state that Notepad has not really changed much on Windows 7. Do we know whether this version is able to handle very large files better? I know in the past they have increased the size of files notepad could handle, and wonder whether this has been done again for the Windows 7 incarnation?

    • Maximilian says:

Large files can’t be handled by Notepad….it’s still a basic tool. Any files that exceed 54 Kb can’t be opened. Check out the link below: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/59578
However…I’ve tried a larger document that exceed this size and Notepad did well…I wouldn’t recommend it for editing 50Mb documents though, like a PhD thesis for example….

I am just now switching my computers over to Windows 7 and need to have them as secure as possible. I work with women who are dealing with cyber stalker situations and need to teach them how to make their computers as secure as possible. So in order to do that I need to understand it myself as much as possible. I am very computer literate and am looking forward to learning as much as I can about Windows 7.

Where would be the best place to get the most information? Is there an e-book, articles, your blog…..
