Thanks for the tips. I’ve tried all three, none work for me.

The .URL extension ALWAYS opens Edge. Funny thing, this happens even when in Control Panel > Set Associations (file types) Windows shows that URL is already associated to FireFox. Very annoying.

Same here. Changing the default app in Control Panel seems to be the only way to get Windows 10 to “say” Chrome is the default, but it still isn’t. Just as you assert, clicking any html doc still opens Edge as does any program that directs you to the Internet. I’m sure this isn’t a mistake, but rather a premeditated marketing ploy from Microsoft.

IF you really “published” this in 2021, as written on top of the article, you should have seen that most of those tips no longer work. Do NOT change the puplishing date unless you really checked everything. Microsoft now puts a hash on the settings – only Windows can change those settings!

This article may have applied to the old and long-superseded version of Edge but is now certainly incorrect and unhelpful. One of the major annoyances of both Windows 10 and 11 is that Microsoft *insists* on us using Edge for various applications. Months after it was deprecated and officially died, Internet Explorer is still registered for some protocols, with no straightforward way to change this. This is a waste of resources: if a user wants to set Google Chrome as the default browser, clicking this setting in Windows should then make it open *everything* web-related. Microsoft’s insistence on our using Edge or Internet Explorer is a waste of resources, anti-competitive and possibly illegal.

Thanks for sharing this feedback. We will try to update the article in the coming weeks.
