30 replies on Dual SIM - What is it? What does Dual SIM mean? How does Dual SIM work?

  1. Cawtau says:

    Hello,
Have any of the dual-SIM phone manufacturers made concessions for having the UMTS or WCDMA (3G) network as the non-preferred SIM or second slot network? I’m not suggesting additional functionality by using that network. I understand the limitation of having a single set of radios. However, many mobile providers do not operate 2G networks anymore. Furthermore, many of those who do are stepping away from GSM. In fact, North American giants AT&T and Rogers both plan to decommission their GSM networks and reallocate those bands/frequencies by 2017.

If there are no allowances for the non-preferred or second slot SIMs to access the 3G network for voice and SMS only, then those fancy dual-SIM phones will eventually become single-SIM phones with a fancy SIM holder.

    Cheers

Nobody talked about dual sims each of which can be used in a different country. e.g.: one for USA and/ the other for european countries. Any ideas and suggestions???

    Thanks!
I have a US and non US sim. I’m out of the US most of the time and at that time only need the US sim to receive texts and verification requests from financial institutions, etc. I could get away with a cheap phone to receive the US texts but wonder if a dual sim phone would serve my needs as well.
If a text comes in on my US sim and I’m using Whatsapp or online using wireless (not data), if the phone is DSDS will I receive the text?

I have a dual sim phone. 4G,/2G SIM cardd. The 2G is useless.
I travel a great deal and need two 4G SIM chips such that I do not need to use an auxiliary router with a 4G SIM with my phone hotspot. Having to carry routers is cumbersome .
Two 4G dual sim phones is a must.. Otherwise buy a router.

I’m going to buy a plum compass 4G LTE dual sim (dual standby) smartphone in a couple days and I was very confused about what dual sim meant when I was researching the phone. I just figured at 35 y/o I was already too old to know what that meant lol. So seeing this article, even if it is a couple years old itself, really cleared it up for me. I was able to understand it without feeling like a dummy, I appreciate that! Well done to the author of this article, you did a great job!!
    Thank You!! 🙂

My main concern about this is possibly getting business and personal life mixed up.

Is there a way that you can tell which SIM card people are calling?, is there a way you can tell between business and personal?

    Example: color coded contacts list.
