Hi!
I’ve been trying to connect to my work PC for weeks now with no success. First, I couldn’t edit the connection properties (solution for which I found on this site! Thank you!). Now though, the connection blocks at the Remote Desktop. The VPN connection itself works — it asks me for my PIN and my username to connect on the work network and the Network list says “Connected”. However, Remote Desktop says it can’T find the PC on the network.
Trying to connect from a Win8.1 laptop to a Windows 7 Pro PC. I know I have the right computer name for the work PC since I have a working connection to the same PC using my home WinXP PC.
Ideas? Thanks! 🙂

Other questions on top of what Vlad has asked:

The Windows 8.1 laptop – is it on the same network as the Windows 7 PC?
If it is not, then does the Windows 7 PC have a public IP address?
Did you enable remote desktop connections on your Windows 7 PC? Use this tutorial for help: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/enable-remote-desktop-windows/

Hi! Thanks for the reply!
No, they are not on the same network. The Win8.1 laptop is my personal laptop that I’m trying to connect to my workplace VPN with. The computer I use at work when I’m in the office is a Windows 7 PC, and it is set up to receive remote connections. I’ve been connecting to this VPN for a good few years using my personal Windows XP PC (which I hope to upgrade to Win8.1 if I can connect the laptop to the VPN).
As for an IP address, I tried obtaining it from the IT support at work, but they say I shouldn’t need it. They gave me an address in the PC name.domain.com to try instead, which didn’t work.

Just enter PC Name, without .domain.com and see how it works.

Also, if this app doesn’t work, try TeamViewer.

Julie

I tried the PC name only, the name with .domain.com. (And I do have the right name.)
There was already a Remote Desktop app installed, so I tried that first. Then I found out about this app in the Windows Store (from this tutorial), so tried that one too… no go either.

I can’t try with TeamViewer as I don’t have permissions to install any software on the work PC. Teamviewer does work, however, from the laptop to my home PC.

Do you try with the IP ? Sometimes the DNS doesn’t work with VPN connection

How do we get an additional license to allow us to remote into a W7Pro from a W8.1 SP3 and be able to use both independently?

Vlad Falon

Hi Julie,

Have you tried connecting to that computer using its IP address instead of the name?

Julie

Hi Vlad, I would try that, but the IT team won’t give it to me. They say I shouldn’t need it to connect to the VPN. 🙂

Since you can’t change any settings on the Work PS with Win7, I’m assuming that your unable to set up the Work PC for remote desktop as well, so your unable to connect to the PC as your being blocked because the settings need changing but you can’t or haven’t??

Julie

Hi Shaun,

I can’t change the settings on the Work PC, but that PC ~is~ setup for remote desktop. I have been using that same VPN connection from my home PC (still running WinXP) for years with no issues. 🙂

On a W8 tablet (e.g., Quantum View), I can open a web browser, go to Turner Classic Movies, and (because I am a subscriber), watch one of their streamed movies. Can I use Remote Desktop to control the tablet from my WP8 phone (Nokia 925)? (I want to do this because the tablet would have an HDMI cable out and so would not be mobile.)

i have windows 8.1 on my PC and windows 8.1 phone , but though remote app is installed on my PC , it is not running, displaying message ” can’t install , value does not fall within expexted range ” what should b done ?

1) Metro apps suck mooseballs.
2) RDP worlks just fine, but Win 8.1 thinks it’s some kind of app that, even in full screen mode, when I mouse to the edge the whole RDP desktop ‘slides’ to one side, and Windows 8.1 on the local computer peeks it’s head out from behind. Fail. Maybe there’s a way to turn that off, but WTF- I don’t have an (another) hour to chase it down.

“I’ve recently switched to free AEROADMIN and it looks good.
You may want to do the same as soon as you try.
Hope this helps”

You may also use R-HUB remote support server to securely connect to remote PCs with complete control. It runs on-premise hence better security.
