Hey the post is very clear and I think everybody can go through the installation in an easy way just thanks to this. I say “bravo”! I have a question: how can I install a new build (let’s say 810x) if I always have a previous build version (810x) of W8DP? Will it keep all my programs and files or will I have to install everything one more time since I can’t (should not) make an updgrade? Thanks for your answer.
I am not sure how it will work, as I don’t have access to newer builds. Most probably, since it is only in development stages, it won’t really support proper upgrades. You might need to backup any important data, install on the same partition as the previous build (which might mean you will have to format it before) and then reinstall + recover all your data and applications.
Thanks for the appreciation Yves. If you do try making an “upgrade” between different builds, let us know how it works. I’m sure there are many other people who have the same “dilemma” as you do. I sure am interested in knowing. 🙂
Some were saying it will expire in January 2013. Most probably you should be able to use it fully at least until when the final version is released for sale, if not even a bit longer than that.

Does anyone know if I can extract the ISO to a Portable Hardrive and then install it from that onto my PC? Any help would be appreciated.
HOw long does the installation take to load the setup files? I have tried twice now and lost patience staring at the black screen with the fish in the middle, the little wheel keeps turning, but nothing seems to happen, so I rebooted. On an I7 and 12GB of RAM, I would have expected it to be fast… 🙁
It doesn’t take long. For me it finished in a about a minute or two. Try again and, if in 5 minutes you are stuck at the same black screen it means there is some incompatibility with your system and you are better off trying it when the next test version is made available. Or… in a virtual machine.

I have not tried Win8 beta for consumer yet, but I have installed Win8 beta for developer and encounter audio and timezone issues. I resolved the audio issue by editing the registry with the following:
Search you registry, run regedit and find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002ServicesAudiosrv
You will find that audiosrv requires the following privileges:
SeChangeNotifyPrivilege
SeImpersonatePrivilege
SeIncreaseWorkingSetPrivilege
Open local security policy and locate the follwing policies:
Bypass traverse checking
Impersonate a client after authentication
Increase a process working set
Add the Local Service account to each policy and then reboot.

Registration key no longer valid?
Hi,
I have recently downloaded the Consumer Preview of Windows 8.
When running the set-up I am asked to enter the registration key, which I did accordingly (TK8TP-9JN6P-7X7WW-RFFTV-B7QPF).
Message said that registration key was invalid.
I did visited the FAQ but it gives the same registration key.
Is it that it’s no longer valid?
Thanks.
If you downloaded the Consumer Preview then, you should download the Release Preview. The key posted in this article works only for the Release Preview – which is the latest test release of Windows 8, launched less than 24 hours ago.
You do not “uninstall” it. When asked to choose the partition where Windows 8 Release Preview gets installed, select the Windows 8 Consumer Preview partition, then click on Drive Options and format that partition.
Before you do this, if you have some important data on your Windows 8 Consumer Preview partition, make a backup of it.
You are welcome. And I’m sure you are quite knowledgeable yourself. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading 7 Tutorials. 🙂
All the best,
Ciprian

Hi Ciprian, Your pages have always impressed me very much.
I see in the comments a wish to leave Win 7 on C: and say for example to put Win 8 onto a second partition say D: (and have it run as Windows from Drive D:)
It was possible to achieve this by running the install of Win 7 out of a running Windows 7 on C: and directing the install to go onto D: but the setup.exe of Windows 8 in the root of the disk doesn’t allow this.
However you can do this with Windows 8 if you run the setup.exe which is in the sourced folder.
Perhaps it’s worth a mention in your excellent tutorial on installing Windows 8.
We will publish a dual-boot guide in the next few days.

How do I install it in exFAT format? It only installs in NTFS file system. Is there a trick to install in exFAT? The setup didn’t allow me to install to a exFAT formatted drive
No I’ve seen reviews of people installing Windows 7 on exFAT…I tried I don’t have any option. NTFS is a lousy system & only good for mechanical hard drives for SSD/flash exFAT is the one to use…MS botched up NTFS must go or give option to install…there is some command prompt code somewhere during setup so you can install via Diskpart I have seen Anandtech review on this but I can’t find this review anymore! Even Anand won’t reply to my tweets regarding this the way does EXIST but MS has stopped it or told people to not do this. MS SUCKS I want exFAT!! :@
You could be more polite. Also, you could document yourself better and learn that the next file system for hard drives will be ReFS, not exFAT. And ReFS is for now implemented in Windows Server 2012. It will take some time until it is rolled out to casual users and mainstream operating systems.

Hi, I am so surprised no-one has discovered this, but since the first beta of Windows 7 I have NEVER used that installation technique. There is a much simpler way:
There is no need to burn the disk image to a disk or make a bootable USB drive, even though it is simple enough, really. Just mount the ISO image or even easier (and also a little-known trick), extract it with 7-zip or similar software. Then, click on setup and install it from there. It is surprising how easy it is. If you install the OS onto a separate partition, you can even keep using your existing OS while it installs the files.
Note: In the case of Windows 8, the installer (setup) file will update your OS, with no option to install to a different partition. In order to do this, navigate to the SOURCES folder and choose the file “setup” from there!
Give me step by step instruction please how to do this…I think with this way I can install it to removable exFAT format drive…please give step by step instruction.
I have CD of Win 7…I copy paste the files from it on the removable drive? I did the windows setup doesn’t show my removable drive in the installation list only physical drives inside the system.
Please tell me how thanks

Trying to install on a newly built computer, no operating system present.
Once I changed the boot order from the HDD to either a DVD or USB drive, it will START the setup process just fine. It finishes the ‘Getting files ready for isntallation’ and reboots. But then it just restarts the entire process over-it doesn’t let me go any farther.
Any idea why this is happening? And how to get past it?
After it gets the files ready for installation and reboots, do not boot again from the same DVD or USB drive. Let it boot from the HDD.

Since I’m upgrading from xp, I want to keep all of my files. If I use the custom installation, the option description says that all of my files wont be moved or kept. Is this really the case? Will I be starting all over again? I mean its not really a big deal if I have to copy my files to a usb drive and then back, but for convenience sake what would be the problem with using the “upgrade” option vs the “custom” option. For some details about my installation, i plan on doing it booting from a usb drive.

You need a bootable device to install it from. You either create a bootable USB memory stick or burn the ISO on a DVD.
You can download the official USB tool from Microsoft to install Windows from thumbdrive here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

We mention this in the second section of this tutorial:
First, you need to download the latest version from Microsoft. Go to Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO images and download the version you want to use.
If you want to burn the .iso image on a disc, check our tutorial: The Complete Guide to Burning Disk Images (ISO & IMG) In Windows 7.

Thanks.

Ok, I’ll do that then.
Thanks a lot!
I have downloaded the ReleasePreview of Windows 8 and the key did not work :/ hellllpppppp
Can you share the location from where you downloaded the release?
Ciprian, how do I uninstall the Windows 8 Consumer Preview safely, so I can replace it with the new Release Preview?
You do not “uninstall” it. When asked to choose the partition where Windows 8 Release Preview gets installed, select the Windows 8 Consumer Preview partition, then click on Drive Options and format that partition.
Before you do this, if you have some important data on your Windows 8 Consumer Preview partition, make a backup of it.
Thanks for the prompt reply Ciprian and for helping those of us less computer literate than you.
You are welcome. And I’m sure you are quite knowledgeable yourself. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading 7 Tutorials. 🙂
