I can’t play my DVD’s – I can go through the whole process of burning a film onto a DVD using Windows DVD Maker, then can play it on my computer but not on my DVD player. I have tried RW discs and DVD-R and the same thing happens. I know it can work because my sister did it and I have had a film from my computer put on DVD and played on my DVD machine, so I know it’s possible. What am I doing wrong? I am based in the UK and my computer and DVD players are used in the UK.

I’d really appreciate some help as it’s driving me mad.

Thanks

George

Make sure that you burn your DVD in PAL format and deselect any active video/audio filters from the DVD Options -> Compatibility tab.
Then, from DVD Options, select Slow at the DVD Burner Speed and finally check your DVD-player to see exactly what recommended types of DVD’s you should use.

Hope it helps.

Andrea

Windows DVD MAker.
Having added items / music / format etc, my DVD will not preview. When trying to burn from there it states ‘ Cannot burn to DVD. DVD-R ok, drive ok. Several attempts and DVD-Rs later, not sure what to try next.
Having made several DVDs without hitch, I am baffled.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Clayton

No help, but I have the exact same problem. Have produced multiple DVD’s without a hitch, including one a couple week ago, now first get message “Error Synchronizing Project” then when I try to Preview get message “Cannot create DVD preview”,then when I try to burn, starts and gets to 3.7% then get message “error occurred when burning DVD. Anyone have an answer?

LENKA

Hi there…i got exactly same problem…please help us what to do???

my video burns to dvd and then when playing back parts of it stops and picturs are missing. During the preview this doesn’t happen. Any suggestions?

George

It sounds like a problem with the burning process or with the type of the DVD disc.
Check the manual of your DVD burner to see what types of discs are compatible with it and try again to burn your video using a compatible brand/type of disc. Also make sure that you don’t stress too much your PC while the encoding and burning process takes place.

Brent

my video burns to dvd but when I play it in my dvd olayer the picture has black bars on the sides and the picture is squished my settings are Start with dvd menu, 16:9, NTSC, dvd burner speed fastest I live in Canada. Any suggestions?

George

What kind of TV do you have? Widescreen or standard?

If you have a standard screen TV, you need to go into the player’s setup menu and tell it you have a standard 4:3 TV, not a widescreen 16:9 TV. It will then automatically letterbox the picture so you can see the full width at the proper proportions.

In some cases you can change the aspect ratio as the disc is playing (by pressing the “aspect” button on the remote control). On most players you have to stop the disc before you can change the aspect.

Also, make sure that there isn’t any codec installed on your system that could cause incompatibilities and double check all options to be sure. You might want to choose medium for the burner’s speed and while the encoding and burning process takes place don’t stress to much your PC (especially your hard drive).

I have created a DVD using both photos & film – the preview shows that everything is fine. The burning process seems to be happening but at the end I find the disc is still balnk!

I have used Windows DVD maker numerous times before & this has never happened – can anyone shed any light on this & tell me how to sort it out??

Thanks Guys !!

Text is Missing when DVD played on TV

Question: Does any one know why some of my text is missing when I play the DVD on any TV (standard of widescreen) regardless of which aspect ratio I use to burn the DVD. The text is ALL there in the DVD Maker Preview and is all there if the DVD is played on the PC — but the text and edges of the photos are truncated when the DVD is played on the any TV.

Joe

I need some help, I’ve been trying to burn DVD’s with this program, but whenever I do, it burns it in a way that makes the picture look like a square box on my widescreen tv.

I set it to 16:9 ratio and it still did it, and I don’t know what to do, as I am wasting DVDs with this program.

rob

Nice info:

I wish Microsoft would make a very simple DVD Burning and movie play product for Business and Professional versions of Windows 7.

Thanks for the article,

I don’t need a Menu for my DVD but I can’t see any option to get rid of the Menu. How do I burn the video only without any menu? All the menu templates display portions of the actual movie so it kinds of kills the suspense.

Anonymous

I’d just go to the options, and choose “play video in a continuous loop”

rjames

I am using Windows 7 DVD maker.
The AVIs look fine in the preview window, but when I burn the DVD the movie is upside down. Funnily enough, within the scene selection on the DVD the video is right-side up, but when selecting a video they play upside down.

I tried using Windows movie maker to invert the video, thinking that after burning the file it would appear right side up, but instead both the scene selection video and the actual video are upside down.

I’ve tried deselecting all the filters, and also restoring the filters to their default settings. I’m tired of making coasters and very disappointed with Windows DVD Maker.

I have burned a video onto a DVD+R in windows dvd maker. I have windows 7 , the video plays fine in the preview window, however when I try to play the video in a dvd player the picture is fine but there is no sound. Any suggestions?

Same problem…No sound on certain avi files (movies). DVD burns great but no sound on dvd……the file plays fine from HD in WMP…? I think it’s a codec problem but which one? I have tried ffshow and winx with no luck. Please help.

same problem…. select 16x 9, in windows 7, and it plays in windows media player in 16 x 9, but burns it to 4:3…. EVERYTIME..

i create a dvd menu and all i see on the dvd player is a blank black screen with colored lines representing where ‘play’ and ‘scenes’ should be located, but the video plays just fine when i hit play. When i put into the computer the menu shows up, but not on my dvd player.

Anonymous

Thanks for the troubleshooting advice. We’ve been having issues, but unchecking those extra filters cleared everything up!

Anonymous

Please help! There is no compatibility tab in options for me. Any suggestions?

I’ve tried burning my DVD’s in both 16:9 and 4:3 but i get black bars at the side of the screen and strange stretched out pictures, any ideas? I’ve tried un-checking the filters but no joy!

For the life of me I cannot find a menu style for DVD Maker – Win 7. I first viewed it on a YouTube video but I think it was removed. The style was like a bookshelf that did some 3D movements then stopped with photos showing in one of the shelves.

Am I crazy? Did I temporarily lose consciousness? Too much PC monitor waves?

If this is familiar to anyone out there please tell me where I can find the menu style. Thanks!!!

Im burning Fight Club to a disk right now, it’s on 0.4% On encoding. It’s a 2 hour video! THIS IS GOING TO TAKE ME HOURS! Its been about 10mins only on 0.4% OMG!

I would suggest using DVD fab version 6. Most everyone I know uses this application and it is very fast. I think there is a free version; there used to be.
If you try this I believe you will be amazed.

jwill58

I think you mean well. This is supposed to be a WINDOWS DVD Maker help forum. I am so tired of people telling me to use another product.I want to use Win DVD Maker. Give us answers to our problems. I can find a dozen other ways to burn DVD’s myself…thanks, but no thanks.

I always get an ‘invalid class string’ error message when I try to burn a DVD using Windows DVD Maker. Any tips on how to solve this?

How can I put photos on a disk without it being a slide show? I would like to be able to open the disk in a program like Paint Shop Pro 7, browse and choose from the thumbnails to open.
Thanks for any help.

You have to make a data DVD, that means you won’t be able to play in a regular dvd player because you’ll be using the dvd as a pen drive, without creating a dvd structure. There are hundreds of burners out there, don’t stick with lousy dvd maker

Dave

I finished burning my project, the playback feature works fine but when I try to play the project on my DVD Player the playback feature still works but there is no audio, even when I try to play the project on the computer I still have no audio. Was just curious if there was anyway that I could fix this.

Chelsea

I made my whole videoand then burned it. It said the video was finished and ready, I take it out, put it in my DVD player, and it says No disc. Yet when I put it in my computer, it works, but not in a second computer in my house. Am I doing something wrong?

In the first meny the size is 65min/150 (or something)

When I burn a DVD copy to DVD (.avi file) its taking almost an hour or more to complete the whole process ! This is with the burn speed set to “fastest” . Should it take this long ? We are talking about a 90 minute to 2 hour movie. Does this depend on the burn speed of my DVD burner ? Thanks for your help,
John

I am burning movies with my Windows DVD maker and it’s working fine, except for now when I’m trying to copy this movie and I get a message that the movie is 3 minutes too long for the disc.

I would think that it would just ask for another disc when the 1st one is full but it wants me to shorten up the video so it can copy to disc.

Anyone have any ideas why this happens? I’m in the US if that helps with the determination.

oska roond

I am simply trying to burn 5 wmv files to a -DVD using Windows DVD maker. (Total playback time would be 50 mins.)

It won’t do it.

Error messgage = “Cannot create the DVD An error occurred when burning the DVD.” This message occurs after the encoding suddenly jumps from about 3% to 90%.

Anybody any suggestions?

Eric

Me too, although my file is double the size. Same error message, and I am seriously disappointed in this software. Nothing but problems so far

Ciprian

Unfortunately we have no other troubleshooting tips, except the ones we mentioned in the What to do in case of issues chapter. Please read that chapter carefully, follow it and, if it still doesn’t work, we’re not sure we can help you fix things.

Windows DVD Maker doesn’t seem to be an very reliable tool.

Anonymous

thanks for your useless advice..

i have finally managed to find out how to fix the problem.

U have to go in the Options settings and reset all the filters to default.

George

Actually in the What to do in case of issues chapters that exactly what we said, in not so many words: deselect all codecs that appear in the compatibility window. By default, Window DVD Burner doesn’t have any codec listed there.

hannah

I have burnt a dvd film onto a disc but there is no sound! Have tried it both on my laptop and in dvd players. What is the solution to this please? thanks

Anonymous

I’ve created a video file (wmv) using Windows Live Movie Maker and then burned to disc using Windows DVD Maker. My frustration is that the disc opens as a slide show – even though I have no photos/slide show in DVD Maker. Only way to see my video is to stop the slide show and then hit PLAY again. The DVD then works beautifully. But how on earth do I stop the slide show – I don’t want a slide show. I just want to go straight to the video.

I have tried different codec’s but every time I try to convert and burn an .avi file I get a perfect picture but I have no sound.
What codec’s are compatible with Windows 7 DVD maker?
It must be the codec? I have CCCP codec because it has everything that I need. With windows xp I had no problem burning with CCCP but I used Roxio easy cd/dvd creator.

PLEASE HELP

Ciprian

Please try to follow the advice from the What to do in case of issues section. Other than that, there is not much else you can change about DVD Maker.

After much experimentation & several wasted CD’s & DVD’s & the purchase of a new DVD player, I finally figured out how to burn photos to disc for play on my TV. Now I would like to do one with music but cannot get it to work either by using the samples that come with the program or from my own music DVD’s. Could someone run me, step by step, through the procedure!!!
Thanks.

Ciprian

In case audio CDs don’t get burned properly with DVD Maker, try Windows Media Player 12.
We also have a guide which can be useful How to Burn CDs and DVDs in Windows Media Player 12.

i too have made many attemps to burnng a movie onto dvd with no successful end results. They finish and eiher when putting into regular DVD players either say cannot play disc or there is no sound. Even playing in anothr computer I get no sound. I tried burning on slow with no filters BTW using windows dvd maker. I have a Roxio Burner on my new Dell Studio computer hooked to my tv via hdmi cable, but when going straight to it get same results. Have tried dvd r- and dvd r+ discs. Why is this so difficult to simply burn a dvd off my computer?

Ciprian

All people who are having issues are kindly asked to do the following:

1. please check the solutions proposed in the What To Do In Case Of Issues section.
2. check previous comments for other solutions.

If they don’t work, unfortunately we cannot provide further support to your problems. Other than the solutions mentioned in the article, we have no other ideas which can help you.

In Windows DVD Maker still doesn’t work, it is better to try another burning solution which has less problems. One good example is Windows Media Player 12 which has pretty good burning capabilities or CDBurnerXP which is a free & very good CD/DVD burning tool.

Tammie

Can you or can you not COPY a disc with windows dvd maker?
(without giving you blue testicles doing it)

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

No, you cannot copy discs with Windows DVD Maker. It works only for creating Video discs of your own.

Jeremy Monceaux

Everytime I try to burn a video file onto a dvd it encodes to about 7% then just stops and says that there was an error when trying to create the disc… I am frustrated and U baught this computer mainly for burning video files. Please Help.

Sudhir

I am trying to burn a DVD using Wndows DVD maker ( windows 7). The file is .wmv. It fails during encoding process. Upto 10% encoding it is OK. Then suddenly jumps to 98% and comes out with error. Pls help

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Can you at least share the text of the error?

Sudhir

Thanks for your reply. The error says ” An error occured during burning the DVD”. I feel it fails in encoding it self and does not reach the actual writing stage.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

If the encoding is problematic, then try what we recommend in the What To Do In Case Of Issues section. If that doesn’t help, I’m afraid we can only recommend you to try a commercial DVD burner. 🙁

Sudhir

Thanks for your reply. But my problem is none of those in ‘What to do in case of issues’.

Abby

Help! I can’t burn my videos. It always says “DVD burner was not found. Make sure a DVD Burner was connected and installed, and then try again.”

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Do you have a DVD burner drive on your computer?

klekle8

it spent almost an hour and a half on encoding 0.4% … the video is 7.89 gigabites should it spend this long on encoding 0.4%? if not, please tell me how to fix it.
