The files that have been shared through HomeGroup, undergo a permanent change in permissions. A new owner based on the system SID gets created which leads to problems when you reinstall Windows.

The same issue is happening to me. I have researched this for the last three days and haven’t found an answer that has fixed my problem. I am still unable to see PC2’s Homegroup and PC2 cannot join my home group citing it is “incorrect password.” I also see that PC2 was having trouble installing MW2 via steam games, stating a “network error (16)”… Whenever I downloaded and attempted to use Network Magic Pro, it believed that PC2 was on “ICS” and Network Pro did not support it and must disable. Though during installation for PC1 for network magic pro, I didn’t get an “ICS” message. Interesting.

The reason why the homegroup thing is so important is for 1) File sharing and 2) I believe it ties closely into why she cannot connect to games on MW2 PC Multiplayer. She is stuck at “synchronizing settings…” for a long time. There seems to be other things going on that I’m not very sure about.

I have double and triple checked that all computers are on the same network, network discovery is on, have the same time synchronization, and all services are started (and automatic in most cases). Yet this issue still seemingly persists. PC2 has a fresh install of Windows 7. The router configurations (Ultraline Series 3) look to all be correct. The firewall configurations have not been messed with and no third party ones have ever been installed. As a side note, I do work for a System’s Support group for a major tax software development company and I am wholesomely stumped by this.

My next steps are 1) turn off both firewalls (though I have tried this before but will again) 2) Possibly format PC1 to ensure there are FRESH installations on both PC’s 3) Exchange the router for a new model / etc. 4) Throw in a new network card for PC2

Any more feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated.

What about just changing the network card on the computer with problems?
Maybe at fault it is the hardware?

What is the point of a homegroup anyway? You can still share files over a network without one. Can someone enlighten me what this is even for. I have found at least 5 arguments (at shared files ) proving that homegroup is truly useless.

Hi,,
I try to join a homegroup was already exist using wifi internet as connection. But apparently I couldn’t find “Join Now” button. So, how should I do?

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

You need to assign to that network the Home profile. Probably it is set as public. If you don’t know how to get this done, check this tutorial: Network Locations Explained.

homegroups are the biggest POS hat MSFT has come up with in a while…
So is turning on IPv6 by default – needlessly sux cycles from the CPU…

I have a home PC that connects to the internet directly through the router (hardline) and two laptops that are wireless. All running Window’s 7. My two laptops can see each other, but the desktop system cannot find the two laptops and therefore I cannot join or create a homegroup from my desktop. How can I fix this?

Good article.

Very helpful – saw this feature when I first tried Win7, but never had the time to understand how to use it.
Multumesc. Thanks.

Unreliable, chaotic and as bad a piece of Microsoft rubbish as it is possible to get.
You would do better advising about alternative software such as teammate, etc’.

I have a home built system running ubuntu 12.10 and a Hp computer running Win 7 Home Preimum they could see each others shares and life was good. I had not used my ubuntu system for a while and turned it on yesterday and nothing.

Today I checked all the settings on both computers and they are they match this tutorial. Both computers have internet access and I can ping the ip address of the Win7 computer from the ubuntu computer and vice versa.

I looked at your “Fix Problem with Homegroup Computers not Being Available” which points to the Network Inspection System as the culprit. I do not have Microsoft Security Essentials (I am happy with Avast) and wonder if a MS update may have set something to cause this.

Any ideas of what I might try to resolve this?

Thanks

I have a “new” internet access showing on my router. It shows very low. I never had this b/4. Can I get rid of it? It is someone’s name, not any number. I also have another access # that’s been there for about 3 yrs. now (when I 1st hooked up my router. As you can tell, I am not computer savvy. Is someone trying to “scam” me?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SYNC CONTENT ON DEVICES IN A HOMEGROUP?

I use a homegroup for my laptop and my netbook. I really want to sync them together so that photos, music, documents etc are saved on both of them. As a kind of backup and it also means I could access all the files when I am not in the homegroup (eg when I am at the office or on holiday). Can anyone help?

Excellent article – the only one I’ve found that explains “In Windows 7, the Homegroup is not available for Public or Work networks.”

I’ve got two Win7 machines and one Surface 3. One of the Win7’s and the Surface can share files in the HomeGroup – the other Win7 pc must have its folders set to share=Everyone before the others can see those folders. Cannot figure out what the problem is. All are on a Home network via cable, the Surface is WiFi.

Any firewall/security suite installed on this malfunctioning computer? Maybe that suite is set to block network sharing!?!?

Why would anyone want to share their personal files with a bunch of strangers?

I am 60yrs old and joined both my laptops (windows 7 and 8) to my homegroup, also connected both to my hp printer by wireless direct. Just need to know you can’t access the internet while printing

Frank

Is there a way to change the home group NAME after it’s been created?

Karen

This is causing me big issues. Everything was working fine until our Modem/Router got spiked in a lightening strike. So have replaced the modem/router and now I am having serious issues with this ‘homegroup’ if I simply close my laptop lid, others who are connected to the wi-fi get disconnected. I have tried all manner of things, restoring, updating, manually entering info etc etc, but to no avail….HELP!!!! Please I am going insane.

Cheryl

I began to notice a sharp increase in usage with my ISP and, after checking various things, discovered that I had become part of a Home Group. I’ve removed myself from it but I’m wondering how this might have happened? Any insight will be gratefully received.

mitch

does homegroup means that someone wants to hack? do i need to remove it on my windows?

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

What? Please read this guide to learn what the Homegroup is.

Max

It was explained in simple, easy language, very easily understood and can be carried out by anyone through clear examples and diagrams.
I have never seen anything like this on internet.
Congratulations!!!

No instructions for what to do when it says “Join…” other than to open the Homegroup selection in the control panel. I can’t seem to find a way to delete the existing selection of someone else’s homegroup nor to create a new one.
Just how do you create a new one – nothing obvious in the control panel.

Hassaan M Salih
