Maria Galea’s photographs show a keen eye and a sensitive nature hiding behind the viewfinder. Although she’s only 18, Maria, originally from Malta, shows great potential and an enthusiasm for learning new things and improving her technique. Her chosen subjects, often flowers and waterscapes as well as portraits, showcase a budding talent that is just beginning to shine. Still in highschool, she intends to pursue higher education in the future and loves all the arts, especially literature and photography. Introducing Maria Galea

Maria spoke to us a bit about her early start with photography and future aspirations in a short interview:

How did you get into photography?

When I was about eleven, my father bought me a small compact camera. I used it to take pictures of everything and, later, I started editing them with GIMP. Then I discovered deviantART and saw all the amazing photographs being posted there. They inspired me to improve my own work. I started saving up for my current DSLR camera. In the meantime a friend of mine who shared my interest in photography - jakmiller - let me experiment with his DSLR. Eventually I managed to buy my own camera and also took a beginners course in photography. I have been practicing ever since.

What inspires you when you take photos? What are your favorite subjects?

I don’t have any particular subjects I prefer, as I believe everything has a beauty worth bringing out in a picture. However, I do love flowers and that’s obvious in my photography. I also like to shoot low shutter speed photos, especially waterscapes and moving lights. I also love portrait photography and would like to experiment more with it.

What type of camera do you use and what sort of post-processing software?

I currently use a Canon EOS 600D, with a 18-55mm lens. As for post-processing software, I use Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Do you have any photographers and artists that you look up to?

I follow many people on deviantART and I believe they are all great artists, but I find it difficult to pick a favorite.

What's the thing/place you would most like to photograph, but haven't had the chance to yet?

I always wanted to photograph an aurora borealis because it looks absolutely amazing. However I haven’t had the opportunity to visit any of the high latitude regions where they occur and unfortunately there’s no chance of them happening in Malta!

Which photograph that you've taken are you most proud of and why?

The photograph I’m most proud of is "Washing away the Memories". It was taken for a contest in which one had to depict water and time. It was shot during my first attempt of using a DSLR camera, and the camera was not even mine. I was extremely happy with the outcome. It inspired me to invest in a DSLR, keep on experimenting and boosted my confidence a little.

What's your plan with photography from here on out?

I intend to keep on learning by taking courses and experimenting. I would like to improve and invest in more equipment which would enable me to produce better results. I don’t think I want photography to become my career, as I want to look at it as something that I do freely, only because I love it. However if an opportunity to do photography professionally should arise I think it would be worth considering.
