Eugen Males, the 25 year-old lead vocalist and guitarist of up and coming post rock band "Fluturi pe Asfalt" (Butterflies on the Asphalt), has a passion for photography and all visual design and believes in the beauty that chance brings to photography. In his opinion, haphazard represents reality much better than any artificial poses and sets can. Originally from the Republic of Moldova, he is currently residing in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and also works as a graphic designer. His work is atmospheric and moody at times, but offers charmed snapshots of the beauty always lurking around the corner of our everyday existence. Introducing Eugen Males
Eugen spoke to us about the beginning of his love for photography and his artistic aspirations in a short interview:
How did you get into photography?
One of my friends got me excited about photography by explaining all kinds of techniques and tricks. That was about 8 years ago and I took all my savings and bought myself a HP compact camera. We were following photo magazines and submitting our photos to different contests. We never won anything, but I never gave up on photography. I would shoot anything and anyone, all my friends and relatives, all the rocks, flowers, fences, buildings, patterns... Later, I became more selective. I don’t take a photo without a good reason anymore.
I prefer taking photos of people, but an occasional landscape does sneak in through my shutter. I’m not really good at organized shootings, or maybe I’m just not a big fan of them. I prefer to have my camera with me at all times and see what happens. I don't like shooting something because "I have to". Spontaneous situations are more to my liking and bring more satisfaction in the end. My friends are my favorite subjects - I photograph them until they ignore me, then the good shots start coming.
What type of camera do you use and what sort of post-processing software?
I’m currently on my 4th camera. I started with a compact HP R707, then a Fujifilm S6500, a Nikon D60 and now a Nikon D7000. But the lens does most of the work, a 50mm or a 35mm f1.8. As for software, I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop for a long time, but recently I have started using Adobe Lightroom.
Do you have any photographers and artists that you look up to?
When I find a good picture while browsing the internet, I look at it and try to imagine how it came to be. I’m not really interested in the person who took it, but in the subject matter. I look up to anything or anyone that's inspiring and makes me pick up the camera and start shooting.
What's your dream camera?
Whatever it is, it should fit in my pocket and have the same properties as a full frame camera and take shots like you would through a quality lens.
Which photograph that you've taken are you most proud of and why?
Saying that I'm proud of any of my good photos would be going too far, because I feel most of them were produced by accident and I don't assume full responsibility for them. If I really had to choose one though, it would be one I took of my friends at Easter during a concert by the banks of the Mures river.
I don’t really plan when it comes to photography. I'll just have my camera with me and see where it goes from there. I recently started filming with my Nikon so maybe a plan would be to do more of it, apply the same "rules" and knowledge to movies and see what happens.
