When you first use apps from the Windows Store , it might not be easy to figure out how to close them, so that they no longer use system resources. If you are lucky and you have a keyboard, closing apps takes seconds but what if you are stuck using your finger on a screen with touch? What if you want to use the mouse to close an app? Here are all the ways to close Windows apps (both desktop apps and modern apps), using touch, the mouse and the keyboard:
How to close apps on devices with touch
Let’s say that you are using a tablet with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 installed and that you are interacting with apps using your finger, on the screen. In this case, closing apps, especially modern universal Windows apps that you download and install from the Windows Store is not that intuitive. With the app that you want to close opened, tap your finger and hold, on the top side of the screen. With the finger still pressed on the screen, drag the app window downwards.
You will notice the app turning into a thumbnail. Keep dragging it downwards, to the bottom of the screen.
Don't take your finger from the screen and drag it to the very bottom of the screen. When you get there, release your finger from the screen and the app is closed.
If you are working with a desktop app on a device with touch, just tap the X button on its top right corner, to close it.
How to close Windows apps using the mouse
If you are using the mouse, then closing desktop apps is as easy as clicking the X button on the top right corner of their app window. However, if you are using a modern app, from the Windows Store , that is made to also work with touch, then things differ between versions of Windows.
For example, in Windows 8.1, modern apps from the Windows Store are shown in full screen. To close them with the mouse, move your pointer to the top-right corner of the screen and a title bar is shown, which includes the traditional X button for closing the app. Click on it and you are done.
In Windows 10, if you are using modern apps from the Windows Store , in desktop mode, the title bar is shown by default and you just click on the X button from the top-right corner of the app windows.
If you are using a modern app in Tablet Mode , in Windows 10, and you need to close it with the mouse, then move the mouse cursor to the top-right corner of the app window. Windows 10 will then display the title bar of the app which includes the Close button. Click on it and the app is closed.
How to close Windows apps using the keyboard
The fastest way to close any app in Windows, no matter whether it is a classic desktop app or a modern app from the Windows Store , is to press the ALT+F4 keys simultaneously, while the app that you want to close is opened.
This command will close the app immediately.
