There are certain situations where you need to backup your contacts or messages, like a system reset or switching to another Windows Phone. Windows Phone didn't have a built-in function that could restore your contacts and messages until now, when Microsoft released it in the form of a free application called Contact+Message Backup. The process is simple: the application creates backup for all your contacts and messages to your SD card. You can use this backup for a later restore on the same Windows Phone or another Windows Phone device. In this tutorial you will learn how to install the Contact+Message Backup app and how to use it. Let's go:
NOTE: You cannot use this app without an SD card so make sure that you have one available before installing it.
How To Install The Contact+Message Backup App
The installation process is pretty much the same as for other apps, but instead of having an actual app installed, which will appear in your App list, Windows Phone will list it as a feature in the Settings app.
First, enter the Store, type "Contact+Messages Backup" in the search bar and tap on the first result. Also, you can tap here to get this app.
Next, tap Install from the bottom on the screen and wait for the app to install.
When the installation is complete, go to the Settings app and scroll through the available options. Tap the Contacts+Message Backup option.
When you first open Contacts+Message Backup, you will have to read its license terms and tap Agree, so that you can go to the next step.
Now, the app will search for items to backup:
If you do not have an SD card on your Windows Phone but you still install this app, the feature will be displayed along with the other options in the Settings app, but you will be notified that an SD card wasn't found. Unfortunately, you can't uninstall this app.

How To Restore Your Contacts & Messages In Windows Phone
If you performed a phone reset or you switched to another Windows Phone and you backed up your contacts and messages, it's now possible to restore them. Your contacts were backed up earlier in the VCF format and your messages in the XML format. Now it's time to bring them back.
In the main screen of the Contacts+Message Backup app tap Restore.
Next, select the backup that you want to restore. Below each item, you will see the date of the backup. Tap on it to display more dates. We recommend that you to choose the date of the last backup.
Next, press the Restore button placed at the bottom of the screen.
The restoration process will begin. The progress will be shown at the top of the screen. You can stop the process at any time pressing the Stop button from the bottom of the screen.
Now you are done. The items you backed up will be displayed again on your Windows Phone.
Although there are many other methods to backup your contacts and messages, we think this is the simplest and has the advantage of being offered as a free app for any Windows Phone user.
However the app has some shortcomings: it doesn't save the contact pic or the location, but it can become quite useful if you want to sign in with another Microsoft account on your Windows Phone or you don't have an available Internet connection and you need to restore your contacts as fast as possible. If you have any questions regarding this app, don't hesitate to share them with us it the comments below.
