Does this mean that this system works like torrents? We would be sharing our data allowance (uploads, specifically) with everone else (quite a few million people) out on the internet?
That, to me, is a recepie for blowing your quota in a few days. How do we control how other people (inadventently) drag off copies of our files and consume our data allowance?
Not everyone in the world does the internet the same way it’s done in Microsoft’s America.

This is redundant in the latest update when you see “some settings are hidden or managed by..”. Perhaps it is somewhere in local machine policy manager. I would like to know too since our home LAN consists of a small office for “retired” professionals and family PCs on GB ethernet. One thing I have noticed is that not all pC’s detect there even is an update at the same time, most perplexing.

Why do my computers “always” get downloads from Microsoft despite setting updates to MS and Local Network? I know the initial update must come from Microsoft, but I am rural using a metered cellular hotspot through my router for my household network. I should be able to update the first computer from MS, then update the rest of my computers from the first.

Very good question. Unfortunately only Microsoft knows exactly how they have created the algorithm download in Windows 10.

It’s mthrfkn not working! What a pity, it would have been a very very good idea and function, but it is NOT WORKING. I have tried several times. If I have 2 machines, one downloads any update, the other is not going to get anything from the first machine. No matter the firewall settings, even if both pcs are on internet. Thank you MS for showing the candy then throwing it to…

WHOAH broski calm down,, no need for such anger and profanity.. be nice and ask again maybe this time explain what happens when you try updating, an error msgs?, are the other computers added to your home network dont know if it matters or not but are your computers discovarable.. i am not a pro at all and most of the time have no clue what i am talking about but i find its better to come onto forums etc and explain what you it is you are doing step by step and what it is thats not working

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Thank you for your constructive approach. Very helpful! 😉

I’m with Frank Castle but will skip the profanities.
I have windows set to update from pcs on my network however despite other pcs having the required update and being visible on the network in File Explorer my pc will only download from my slow internet connection, Been messing with it for hours including full network reset on both machines.
I am wondering if there are other required settings. I do not use home group because I have Linux boxes as well,

Got a question .. if you allow updates to be sent from ‘other’ computers (not meaning Network but over the internet) wouldn’t that open you to a security issue if their computer is infected?

Dale

You can get hacked through windows updates using other computers.

Ciprian Adrian Rusen

No, you can’t.

Hey guys, have you checked “c:WindowsWindowsUpdate.log” file for any local computer IPs?

Jerry

Your tutorial documents exactly what I have been experiencing! Only a few percent of the download is via the LAN. Delivery optimization should give priority to the LAN to avoid loading the internet connection.

This new feacture is crap on a large scale network. Local network for them is any range of ips that are considered local, in my case several ranges are part of the colcal network, but in reallity they are part of a different geografical location creating massive amounts of traffic causing the network to almost stop.

I set up to have it download from local PCs, but it still downloaded from MicroSoft.
One PC was fully updated and had all the drivers and everything, yet the installation on my other PC still downloaded them from Microsoft.
Evil MicroSoft making me download from them slowly instead of my local PC.
