We all know how important it is to be able to personalize your smartphone and if there's one area where Windows Phone stands out, it is its customizability. In this operating system you can pin, resize, move or unpin any app or shortcut you want, so that you can truly make the Start screen your own. In this tutorial we will share how to resize the tiles on the Start screen, move them around and unpin them when you no longer wish to use them.
NOTE: We've previously shown how to pin anything you wish to the Start screen, in this guide: How to Pin Anything to Your Windows Phone's Start Screen.
How to Resize a Tile on the Start Screen
First, let's see how to resize the tiles that are displayed on the Windows Phone Start screen. To begin, you'll have to enter into the editing mode:
Tap and hold the tile you want to resize, for a couple of seconds. It will be placed in the foreground and you will see two buttons showing up on its corners. Also, the other tiles will be dimmed to the background.
To change the size of the tile, tap the Resize button on its bottom right corner.
The tile will redimension itself to the next available size. Depending on its current size, it could go from small to medium or wide. If necessary, the tiles around it will automatically rearrange themselves so that the resized tile has the necessary room to be displayed.
As mentioned earlier, Windows Phone 8 features three different sizes for the tiles: small, medium and wide. However, some apps might provide tiles only in two sizes: small and medium. This behavior is set by the developer of the app and it cannot be modified by the user. A very popular example is the Office app from Windows Phone. If you experiment with it, you will see that it has only two sizes for its tile instead of three.
When done, you can exit the editing mode with a tap on the Start button or anywhere on the empty space of the Start screen.
How to Move a Tile on the Start Screen
In Windows Phone 8, you can also rearrange the tiles on the Start screen so that they are positioned more to your liking. To do that, tap and hold the tile you want to move. When it becomes editable, drag it to where you want it positioned.
Just like when resizing tiles, moving a tile will also readjust the position of the tiles surrounding it, so that they fit to the new layout.
Note that if you want to move more than just one tile, you don't have to exit the editing mode and start again. Simply tap and drag the other tiles you want to move around.
When done moving tiles, you can exit the editing mode with a tap on the Start button or anywhere on the empty space of the Start screen.
How to Unpin a Tile from the Start Screen
To unpin a tile from the Start screen, tap and hold it for a short while, until the two buttons (Unpin and Resize) are displayed on its corners. Then tap the Unpin button and the tile is removed.
Note that if you want to remove another tile, you can simply tap it to select it and then tap the Unpin button for it. To finish editing the tiles on the Start screen, tap the Start button or somewhere in the empty space of the screen.
As you can see from this guide, it is very easy to resize, move and unpin tiles on the Start screen of your Windows Phone. It goes a long way into making your smartphone more personal and making sure that it includes only the apps and shortcuts that are useful to you.
